House Backs STEM Education Bill: Next Stop, White House Erik Robelen, Education Week
A bill to reauthorize the America COMPETES Act is making its way to President Obama's desk after the House yesterday approved it by a vote of 228 to 130. The action comes after a bumpy ride for the legislation, which aims in part to promote STEM education. Many observers worried it might not make it this far. In the end, only 16 House Republicans supported the measure, although it was approved by unanimous consent in the Senate last Friday. Learn More
Senate Effectively Kills DREAM Act for Lame-Duck Session Mary Ann Zehr, Education Week
In a procedural vote on December 18, 2010, the U.S. Senate effectively killed the chances of the DREAM Act passing during the current lame-duck session of Congress. The Senate lacked five of the 60 votes it needed for further debate and consideration of the measure, which was designed to give undocumented students who have graduated from U.S. schools a path to legalization. OVAE Announces Goals for 2011-12 The federal Office of Vocational and Adult Education in the U.S. Department of Education recently announced three goals for 2011-12 focused on the links between education and economic opportunity:
Goal 1: All youths and adults are ready for, have access to, and complete college and career pathways.
Goal 2: All youths and adult students have effective teachers and leaders.
