Science Project Ideas-Level 2

1. With which type of battery do toys run longest?

· Variable: 3 different brands of batteries

· Control: same toy, same size batteries

2. How much water will the soil retain?

· Variable: 3 types of soil

· Control: same amount of water measured for each trial, same amount of soil, same size container

3. Does the amount of salt added to water effect the time it takes to boil?

· Variable: different measured amounts of salt

· Control: same amount of water, same amount of heat applied to each water amount, heat in same heating container

4. Does an ice cube melt faster in air, water, or oil?

· Variables: air, water, oil

· Control: same size ice cube

5. Which additive prolongs the life of cut flowers?

· Variables: water, sugar, bleach (or 3 different additives of your choosing)

· Control: same type of flower from the same bunch, same amount of liquid, same additive to liquid ratio, same external conditions (lighting, heat exposure, etc)

6. Which liquid has the highest viscosity?

· Variables: 3 different viscosity liquids

· Control: Same size container, same amount of liquid, same object dropped into liquid

7. Will more air inside a basketball make it bounce higher?

· Variable: 3 different air pressures inside a ball

· Control: same ball, same height to drop ball from, measure 1st bounce of ball in each trial

8. Will the color of light affect plant growth?

· Variable: either 3 different bulbs in 3 heat lamps or in front of window covered in colored plastic wrap

· Control: same size window facing the same direction, same amount of water, same seed, same container

9. What brand of popcorn pops the most kernels?

· Variable: 3 different brands of popcorn

· Control: same size bag, same time popping, same microwave on same settings

10. Does the color of water affect its evaporation?

· Variable: 3 different water samples

· Control: same amount of water, same location, same container

11. Do suction cups stick equally well to different surfaces?

· Variable: 3 different clean surfaces

· Control: same/kind of suction cups, same weight attached to suction cup

12. Which brand of diaper holds the most water?

· Variable: 3 different brands of diapers

· Control: same amount of water for each trial (do as many trials as necessary until all diapers are leaking. Record how much water it took for each brand of diaper to leak)
