Dr. Webb-Sunderhaus

ENGL W130—Fall 2007

Paper Two

For this paper, you will compare and contrast the views of growth and change found in “The Achievement of Desire” and A Hope in the Unseen. Discuss the argument these texts make regarding the impact of education on an individual’s growth and change. Do they suggest that education does or does not change a person? Do they disagree about the emotional consequences of education? What is their view of the impact of schooling on family relations? Do they agree on some points, but not on others? These are only some of the questions you could consider as you write this essay; you do not have to write about all of them.

You should, however, integrate your own opinion into this essay. What do you think of these texts’ arguments? If you think both texts make similar arguments, do you agree with their conclusions? If the texts’ arguments diverge, which one do you find yourself agreeing with more?

This project must be four-five pages long and typed, using 12 point Times New Roman font and MLA format. A draft must be ready for peer review on Thursday, October 11th, and a draft (with all previous work attached) will be turned in to me at the beginning of class on Tuesday, October 16th. I will respond to your draft and return it to you with comments. You will then revise your draft and submit it for grading (again, with all previous work attached) on a due date of your choice, but no later than Thursday, December 6th.
