NORTH P&I CLUB REWARDS BEST STUDENTS ON LEADING MARINE TECHNOLOGY COURSE 29 DECEMBER 2015

North P&I Club has presented awards and scholarships to the best students on one of the world’s leading marine technology courses. The presentations were made at the prize-giving ceremony for the Marine Technology with Management MSc post-graduate programme, which took place recently at Newcastle University’s School of Marine Science and Technology.

North P&I Club’s long standing relationship with the renowned Newcastle University School of Marine Science and Technology is now into its 14th year. The school is the UK's first to provide a single base for all education, innovation and research related to the sea, with more than 800 students from more than 25 countries taking degrees in marine biology, technology and oceanography each year. The MSc programme is led by professor John Mangan and senior lecturer Paul Stott and one of the programme’s eight modules is run by North. The module covers an introduction to P&I insurance and underwriting as well as collisions, damage to property and pollution.

Bulgarian Cvetan Belchev of Mitsui OSK Lines received the award for the best performance on the 2014/15 MSc programme overall. Aged 29, he is currently working in London as an operations coordinator for the Japanese firm’s European tanker division. Singaporean research student Adnan Rahim won the award for the best performance in the 2014/15 MSc programme module on Marine Liability Insurance and Law.

UK student Andrew Sumner, who graduated from the school’s Marine Technology with Offshore Engineering degree course this summer, was awarded a scholarship from North to support his place on the 2015/16 MSc programme. Bradley Scott, currently in the final year of the same degree course, also received a scholarship. The scholarships are for students wishing to pursue a career in marine insurance or who have a relevant dissertation topic.

Announcing the awards, North’s loss prevention executive Simon MacLeod said, ‘I would like to congratulate all four students for their outstanding performance. I would also like to commend professor John Mangan and senior lecturer Paul Stott for their hard work and commitment to the MSc programme. They have again produced a group of graduates who will be a great asset to the global shipping industry.’
