Rounding Study Guide

Place Values:

Thousands, hundreds, tens, ones (whole number) . tenths, hundredths, thousandths, ten-thousandths

Example 1:

Round 0.468 to the nearest tenth.

4 is in the tenth place. → 0.468

Everything to the LEFT STAYS. → 0.

Look to the right of the number. A 5 or above, the number will become one higher. A 4 or below, the number will stay the same. → 0.468 to the right of the 4 is a 6, so the 4 will become a 5.

Everything to the right of the number becomes a zero. → 0.500 we do not need the zeros after the decimal because it does not change the value of the number.

The answer is 0.5.

Example 2:

Round 4,204.21 to the nearest hundred.

2 is in the hundreds place. → 4,204.21

Everything to the LEFT STAYS → 4,

Look to the right of the number. A 5 or above, the number will become one higher. A 4 or below, the number will stay the same. → 4,204.21 to the right of the 2 is a 0, so the 2 will stay a 2.

Everything to the right of the number becomes a zero. → 4,200.00 we so not need the zeros after the decimal because it does not change the value of the number.

The answer is 4,200.
