V. Leadership Succession Planning

This is critical to the future success of the SIG.

a.  Have you identified future leaders within your SIG? Yes No

If so, who? Alisa Penrod, Lori Ranollo, Erin Wyatt, Peggy Thomas and Rita Battaglini are very dynamic members of our leadership team and have verbalized interest in considering coordinator-elect position in the future.

If not, what is your plan to ensure future SIG leaders?

If one of these individuals does not agree to run for office in 2010 and if a call out to membership does not result in any takers, I will also email all work-group members and individuals who had submitted newsletter articles to determine their level of interest.

b.  What additional help from the Nominating Committee and/or staff do you require to help in this effort?

If the above measures fail (they have not in the past) we may seek candidates from the Leadership Mentoring Program.

XIV. LIST STRENGTHS OF SIG:

Our leadership team is strong and very involved. They are willing to assist other leaders if unable to function in their role temporarily. They also have great success in engaging other SIG members to become involved in authoring newsletter articles and presenting at Congress and IOL. Our membership is made up of nurses from a variety of care settings making our outreach broader.

LIST CHALLENGES/WEAKNESSES OF SIG:

(State how you are addressing these.)

Our challenges include maintaining leadership core, finding replacements when individuals must step down from leadership roles, and to finding new leaders as new work groups are formed.

XV. SIG VIRTUAL COMMUNITY – LIST HOW YOU HAVE USED YOUR SITE

Our Virtual Community is "manned" by two very capable individuals-Rita Battaglini and Sue Bowman. They keep an eye on the content and are quick to update it when needed. We continue to use it as a communication tool for new information of interest to our membership and have recently posted case studies to promote studying for the CBCN examination. We are also in the process of updating our patient education resources.

XVI. ADDITIONAL: COMMENTS, QUESTIONS, PROBLEMS, AND SOLUTIONS:

I am stepping down as coordinator of the Breast Care SIG this Congress. I thank the ONS staff for all of their support and guidance over the past 5 years. As SIG functions continue, I think that it is important to consider some type of stipend for coordinators to attend Congress, since this is the only time they are able to meet face-to-face with their membership, and it is an expectation that they do this. As hospitals/healthcare facilities cut back expenses, travel to conferences for nursing staff is often the first expense eliminated. It will become a hardship for coordinators to come and as such, more difficult to recruit leaders to run for the position.
