This is primarily a USAGE test—
Can you fix your own paper or someone else's when errors appear?
You will not always have the magic spell check and sometimes, it won't even work for you!
I. On pages 2-4, you will review punctuation of
A. Titles (Please Be Nice to Peanut M and Ms)
B. Proper nouns (like Dad, Mom, Aunt Genie—and when they need to be capitalized!)
C. Apostrophe in Possessives (you were quiz on this November 30, 2007)
II. On pages 5-7, you will review punctuating sentences:
A. Commas

Two easy way to remember

2) If it's on the shelf, it should be underlined; if it's inside what's on the line it has quotation marks around it

When do I know what to capitalize?
1) Cap. titles and abbreviations for titles that appear before and after people’s names: ________________

I. Punctuation of titles, proper nouns (in your notes), and apostrophes in possessives
(1-5) Circle errors, and write the correct letter above the mistake OR write correct on the line. There are no more than 3 mistakes in each.
1. Miss Bowman talked to my Mom about my Math grade. ___________________

I. Apostrophe in possessives (1-5)
Directions:1) Write the RULE for each correct example and incorrect example.
2) Make corrections to the sentences that are incorrect
3) If you are ever unsure, there's no shame in making it into a prepositional phrase! Rewrite the selected sentences to include prepositional phrase instead of possessive apostrophes.
1. I will be going to Mrs. Pass's house for dinner tonight.
1) Correct rule: Mrs. Pass is a singular noun = 's

I. Apostrophe in Possessives: Circle the correct word for each sentence (1-4)
1. The suburb’s / suburbs's / suburbs' streets were cleaner than its neighbor.
2. All of the carpenter's / carpenters's / carpenters’ tools were scattered throughout their worksite.
3. When I went to the White House, I saw the president’s / presidents's / presidents’ big body guard. (only one president)
4. The Giant's / Giants's /Gaints’ quarterback may be the driving force in their win at the Superbowl.
Section II review: PUNCTUATING SENTENCES
You need to remember when to use a comma, semi-colon, colon, or dash
Commas
1. Commas need to be used in a _______________________ when more than __________________ items are listed.
Ex. I ate Skittles M&Ms Starburst and Snickers.
2. Also use commas in a _______________________________ with a ____________________________ following.
Ex. Megan went down the shore____________ she went up the mountains.

3. Also use in a ______________________ when the sentence begins with a dependent clause indicator.

Common DCIs: when, although, since, because, until, ___________________________________________
Remember: Do NOT use a comma in an ID
Example: I had to make sure I studied because I was planning on doing well on the test.
4. Also use commas to set off an __________________, words that can be taken out of a sentence.
Ex. ________________, my favorite time of the year, always seems so short.
Semi-colons
Use a semi-colon when combining ________________________________________.
DO NOT add a _____________________________ when using a semi-colon.
Ex. Maura ate pizza____it had pepperoni on it.
Remember: a ; can ONLY be used when you have a SV;SV
Colon
Use a colon before introducing a ____________________________.
Ex. Here’s what I need from the store___ bread, juice, and milk.
Yes, this is the ONLY way you'll see a colon used on the test!
Dash
Use a dash to bring attention to another piece of information, usually a fragment
Ex: It is dreadful to be on the roads in peak-hour traffic—dreadful indeed.
Write TWO a D, I sentence then change it to a ID for #2

9. All the children behaved very well therefore, they will all get a treat.
10. Working teenagers have a tough time balancing school and downtime this means that only the most disciplines teenagers succeed at their jobs.

II. find comma errors—add a comma (1-4)
1. There are many arguments that could go either way but my reasons are very straight-forward.
2. This seems unimportant yet when these individuals are given freedom they live happier.
3. If we had them they would invade our privacy.
4. If someone were kidnapped the police would be scrambling around to find them. (also V. error)
