Requirements for Enrolling in Independent/Directed Studies (ACCT/FIN/HRM/IS/MGMT/MKTG 697) Courses

Each student enrolled in a Directed/Independent Studies course must have this form on file in the relevant department and in the MBA Office along with the University Independent/Directed Studies. The proposal for the Directed/Independent Study must be attached to this form.

Procedure for Approval for Independent/Directed Studies:

1. The student must write a proposal that includes a short description of the project including the overall research objective and plan, how progress will be monitored, the final deliverable, and a specific timetable for each step. If the Directed Study course is to be substituted for an MBA course, the student should provide justification.

2. The student must find a faculty member that is willing to supervise and work with the student. The proposal approval process provides an opportunity for the Faculty Advisor, Department Chair, and MBA CBA Director of Graduate Programs to offer any additional suggestions or requirements. If the Directed Study course is to be substituted for an MBA course, the faculty member who will be supervising the study should comment on student’s justification for the substitution.

3. After the faculty member approves, the proposal is submitted to the department chair, who approves or denies the proposal based on the content of the proposal and budget considerations (if appropriate).

4. Then the proposal must be submitted to the CBA Director of Graduate Programs for approval.

5. Once the proposal is approved by all parties; Faculty Advisor, Chair, and CBA Director of Graduate Programs; the student can register for the course. Copies should be distributed to Faculty Advisor, Department Chair, and the CBA Director of Graduate Programs.
