Primary Children’s Hospital is a service of Intermountain Healthcare. Located in the foothills of Salt Lake City, Utah, Primary Children’s Hospital is a 289-bed freestanding pediatric level-one trauma center with a service area covering five states (Utah, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, and Nevada). Primary Children’s Hospital is the pediatric teaching hospital for the University of Utah, School Of Medicine and its physicians. The Hospital has been is recognized annually by US News and World Report as one of the best children’s hospitals in the country.
Position Summary / The Foundation Regional Chief Development Officer (RCDO) is a senior leader in the Intermountain Foundation, providing leadership to assigned philanthropic programs/entities within Intermountain Healthcare. This position reports directly to the System Chief Development/VP Officer with a dotted line to the Regional Vice President. The RCDO serves as a Regional Liaison and Executive Council Member and provides counsel to the Regional Vice President and to respective Community Development Boards on the vision, strategy and operations of philanthropy throughout the assigned region. In collaboration with the Regional Vice President, the executive leadership, the region-specific Community Development Boards and the development staff, this position will further engrain a culture of philanthropy within the region and foster philanthropic relationships in the community. This position leads the strategic planning efforts for philanthropy to effectively meet the capital, project, program and research funding priorities of the Region. The RCDO carries a significant portfolio of high-wealth donor prospects and works continually to integrate regional and hospital leadership, physicians and volunteers into a carefully planned program of cultivation, solicitation and stewardship. The specific position of Regional Chief Development Officer - Primary Children’s Hospital (PCH) will provide senior level oversight, guidance and motivation to the functions of Primary Children’s Hospital Foundation, (PCHF) an entity of Intermountain Foundation. The position will also act as the most senior major gifts officer within Primary Children's Hospital. The focus of all duties will be on measuring the progress and success of fundraising activities—with a particular emphasis on major and planned giving efforts.
Essential Job Duties / · Develop a strategic plan with short- and long-range goals to meet the funding objectives of Primary Children’s Hospital and to enlist the support of Regional leadership, staff, boards, physicians and volunteers.
· Develop and manage a comprehensive fundraising program with emphasis on major and planned gift support from area individuals, families, foundations, organizations and corporations, including a systematic process of identification, qualification, cultivation, solicitation, investment and stewardship.
· Serve as a high-impact contributor to the Foundation’s Philanthropy Advisory Council (PAC) comprised of Foundation leaders in creating strategies and programs to benefit the entire Foundation landscape.
· Oversee and approve proposals and agreements.
· Oversee the implementation and management of special campaigns.
· Carry a personal portfolio of major gift donor prospects.
· Serve as a respected member of the Hospital/Region Executive Team.
· Recruit, retain, develop, mentor and supervise regional Foundation staff to ensure efficiency, effectiveness and outstanding overall performance.
· Provide direction and resources to inspire and continually strengthen the Foundation Board in their quest to carry out Intermountain’s mission and that of the region.
· Provide strategic counsel to Community Development Boards on matters relating to policy and fundraising management; keep Board members abreast of national and regional trends, ethical practices and benchmarks.
· Develop appropriate case statements for region’s research, capital, project and program funding priorities.
· Ensure a coordinated, strategic and effective gift solicitation process utilizing Community Development Board members, volunteers, development officers, staff, physicians and Regional Hospital Executives.
· Manage resources to accomplish appropriate funds-raised-to-expense ratio for the region.
· Collaborate with Regional Executive Leadership in the capital and program budgeting process to identify funding needs and priorities, consistent with the Region’s business development and strategic plans.
· Maintain a system for tracking and reporting fundraising progress to leadership and donors, relative to agreed-upon funding needs and priorities.
· Oversee fundraising for and grant-making activities related to research projects.
· Manage processes for identifying, researching and qualifying potential sources of gift support from individuals, physicians, employees, foundations and corporations.
· Develop and manage the Region’s annual foundation budget.
· Coordinate with Intermountain’s Accounting and Finance Departments to develop and maintain audit-compliant records.
· Ensure the appropriate acknowledgement of all gifts and the development of effective donor recognition programs and techniques.
· Serve as a public speaker on behalf of the Region/Hospital and Intermountain Healthcare as requested.
· Be actively engaged in the community.
· Pursue continued professional development through philanthropy healthcare association and education activities and conferences, in order to enhance and increase fundraising skills and to stay abreast of industry trends and best practices, as well as related tax and legislative developments.
· Serve as a subject matter expert and resource to others on issues related to healthcare philanthropy.
Qualifications / Qualities and experiences that ideal candidates should display include:
· An earned baccalaureate degree from an accredited four-year college or university.
· Seven (7) years as an accomplished fundraising professional including accomplished experience in a leadership position and with demonstrated achievement in systematic and measured major gift fundraising.
· Effective and motivating interpersonal skills, including relationship building and communication, in-person, over-the-phone and by e-mail with diverse groups of people (e.g. volunteers, civic/business leaders, board members, patients and their families, hospital staff, foundations and corporations).
· Demonstrated success in organizing and effectively utilizing volunteer leadership (Boards, committees) in effective foundation/fundraising practices.
· Demonstrated strong analytic and creative skills used to develop best practices, set strategic goals and assess outcomes.
· Experience in guiding the successful integration of event and annual funding programs to meet/maximize the larger potential of the region/hospital/foundation.
· Strong project planning and management skills, demonstrating detail orientation, timeliness, and ability to work under pressure.
· Advanced writing skills that produce clear, accurate, and persuasive communications (proposal materials, letters and presentations).
· Effective public speaking and presentation skills.
· Success in collaborating with colleagues in a complex matrix organization.
· Experience using common software programs including Raiser’s Edge donor records systems, Internet research tools and social media applications.
· An ability to demonstrate a commitment to the inspiring spirit and values of this respected children’s hospital, and the traditions that have built both its reputation, and the impassioned volunteer involvement of so many who value its great mission.
Preferred / Preference will be given to candidates that also display one or more of the following:
· Academic field of study in non-profit management, philanthropic studies, public administration, public relations, communications, marketing, English or business administration.
· Advanced academic degree in a related field.
· Professional and quantifiable fundraising experience with a children’s hospital.
· Professional certification (CFRE, FAHP or equivalent).
· Fundraising experience in a healthcare environment.
· Demonstrated history of increased responsibility and progression in the fundraising profession.
· A demonstrated history of activity and awareness with local community needs and dynamics.
