Worksheet 3

Enduring Understanding

Cultural identity is determined by many factors.

Objectives:

- to explore the above enduring understanding

- to explore the meaning behind people’s behavior

Australian Aboriginal Culture

Before we begin this section, you need to know that the Australian Aborigines belong to many different tribes, each with its own dialect and different customs.

Interpreting evidence

1.  Group discussion (Form a group of 3 or 4 people)

2.  Reflect on the movie.

Question

What does the movie tell you about aboriginal culture in that area of Australia?

·  Discuss the behaviors you saw in the movie (10 minutes)

·  Create hypotheses (guesses / conclusions) about what these behaviors suggest about aboriginal customs

·  Make an individual list (each person must have their own notes) of hypotheses about aboriginal customs

Now go to page 2 for instructions on investigating your hypotheses further.

Research (Individual work)

(if your hypothesis is ‘obscure’, you might have difficulty finding information – you may go to other sites if you wish)

Instructions

Set up a table for your notes, using the format laid out below.

·  As you can see, you need to write in your hypothesis in the heading of the table.
