Thank you for participating in this fall’s Service Project. Reach 11 Phoenix Park (northeast Phoenix) is in serious disrepair. Many different tasks will be involved in completing this project: clean and restore culvert drains; stabilize tread edges and banks with rock armoring; patch surface; manage surface lows to prevent head cutting action as water moves off the low side of the tread; reconfigure one surface water crossing to diminish silt accumulation; and materials transport associated with all of the above.

Difficulty Rating: Moderate

Minimum Age: 15 years - A minor who is not accompanied by a parent/guardian must bring a completed Waiver and Medical Release for Minor.

The project will run from 8:00 AM to approximately 3:00 PM. Lunch will be provided and be prepared for another great REI prize draw. Watch for the weather reminder emailed a few days before the event.

Directions (mileage may vary)

· From the 101 (Pima Freeway), take Tatum Blvd exit and head south approx. 1 mile. Main event parking is located on the east side of Tatum Blvd. This is just north of Union Hills Dr. and the canal.

· From Union Hills Dr heading east ending at Tatum Blvd turn left heading north for approx. 1/10 of a mile with the main event parking located on the east side of Tatum Blvd just north of the canal.

· Wheelchair participants should park at the alternate parking site located across from Phoenix Recreation Rd. This is on the east side of Tatum Blvd and is about 1/4 mile north of the main parking.

· For either parking area, look for the VOAz sign posted on Tatum Blvd directing you to turn into the parking lot.

· Please watch for the parking attendant and follow parking directions as given.

· Check in at the event will take place at the REI tent. There will be someone at each of the parking areas directing you to the registration area. Shuttles will be available or you may walk (approx. 1/4 mile from the main event parking).

Event Overview

8:00 AM Check-In opens at Reach 11 at the work area REI tent; pick up REI participant t-shirts

9:00 AM Assemble into work crews across from registration point; work begins

11:30 AM Lunch and appreciation presentation

12:30 PM Work resumes

3:00 PM Work ends; return to registration area; walk or shuttle to parking

Please Bring the Following:

ü ** water bottles or a hydration system (3 quarts recommended)

ü ** good pair of hiking/work boots (closed-toe, no sandals)

ü work gloves

ü sun protection (wide brim hat, sun screen)

ü snacks to help you make it to lunch time

ü long pants and shirt sleeves are recommended

ü rain gear and warmer clothing if that is what the forecast indicates

ü waist pack or small backpack to carry your equipment/water/snacks
