Primary KS1/2 NQT CPD Programme 2017-18 LBHF, RBKC, WCC

Getting started KS1/2: This is an introduction to the NQT year, taking a look at the preparation needed for the first few days, terms and year. It looks in depth at school routines, where to find information and who to ask for support. Classroom organisation, behaviour management and expectations for the NQT year are clearly laid out.

The session will focus on NQT observations, how to collect evidence, regular meetings you will have with your NQT mentor/tutor, establishing effective classroom routines and expectations, and making a good early impression on children, parents and colleagues. You will leave this session feeling confident about the right questions to ask, getting good routines in place and how you might best use your dedicated NQT non-contact time.

The purpose of the session is to provide you with:

· A framework for making sense of behaviour and understanding why it occurs

· Proactive strategies to promote positive behaviour

· Reactive strategies to manage unwanted behaviour more effectively when it occurs

· A structure for applying the information on B4L to their individual class and setting

Wednesday 27 or Thursday 28 September 1.30-4.30pm

English as an additional language KS1/2: A high proportion of the children attending our schools have a home language other than English. Our schools serve a rich, culturally diverse community and some of the children you will teach may be new arrivals to the UK, or have limited English when they join the school. This session will help you understand the issues and barriers to learning that may exist for children in this group. It will help you develop strategies and practical ideas for addressing these, and signpost you to further resources and sources of support.

Wednesday 11 or Thursday 12 October 1.30-4.30pm

Building personal resilience KS1/2:

This twilight session will focus on developing your resilience at the start of your teaching career. Using a Resilience framework, we will explore the resources available to support you in your schools and in the wider community. Starting with personal values, we will explore what factors make us resilient in the face of challenges. We will then consider what external factors in our working environment support us: culture/ethos, a sense of team, methods of communication. The Resilience model used will also have relevance for our classroom practice.

Aims:

· To develop our understanding of Resilience in a work context.

· To reflect on our personal resilience.

· To identify supportive and risk factors in our current work environment.

· To share ideas and resources for developing resilience.

· To consider how we can incorporate a Resilience framework into our teaching practice.

Tuesday 17 October 4.00-6.00pm

Assessment for learning Part 1 – effective teaching and learning KS1/2:

Formative Assessment/Assessment for Learning is the most effective means of maximising pupil achievement to meet the current assessment arrangements and equips children to be assessment literate in all their learning. This course will explore the fundamental principles for effective learning. You will have the opportunity to explore strategies to create a culture which promotes a positive learning culture; effective strategies for feedback; you will be able to think about effective teacher/pupil talk and high quality questioning, and explore how to plan a learning journey.

Video clips from Reception to year 6 will be shared as well resources and opportunities for questions. The principles of formative assessment are fundamental to effective learning, therefore not fixed to one subject and can be used across the curriculum for all subjects. The breadth of the curriculum will be considered with specific examples in Literacy and numeracy.

Wednesday 1 or Thursday 2 November 1.30-4.30pm

Reading for comprehension KS1/2:

In this session, we will explore a range of active reading strategies to improve and develop pupils’ reading comprehension, with a particular focus on inference skills. We will also consider ways of expanding pupils’ vocabulary and ability to work out the meaning of words from context. We will discuss the importance of ‘shared reading’ as a way of modelling the reading process to pupils. NQTs will have the opportunity to discuss ideas and explore resources for reading fiction, non-fiction and poetry, for use in shared, guided and independent reading.

Aims:

• Understand the complexities of reading comprehension
