Colonial society was composed of several social classes. One’s social class determined political and legal rights, business or trade, and personal attire. Students should understand the social class systems of colonial times and their relationship to clothing and dress.
ELL Strategies:
Create pictures with labels for the different pieces of clothing worn during Colonial times. · Discuss fashion and clothing today. Discuss what people wear on different occasions/situations and with respect to their career/occupation.

· Discuss the structure and text features in the book and how they will aid in the understanding of the text.

·  Discuss the text features used throughout the book and how they helped to better understand the text.
·  Using the text just read and the following website, create a group ven diagram comparing the dress of the wealthy class with the dress of the poor or servant class http://www.americancenturies.mass.edu/activities/dressup/index.html

Assessment:
Using the group ven diagram created in the After Reading activity above, each student will write a comparative description of the dress standards of the different class systems of colonial times including the reasons for the differences. / Activities:
