An ASUCD Senate Bill to allocate $2,000 from Senate Reserve to Aggies of Color in support of the UC Davis delegation to the 24th Annual Student of Color Conference.

BACKGROUND: For the past four years, UC Davis students have been actively involved in attending the Student of Color Conference, henceforth referred to as S.O.C.C, and have increased our participation from 37 students in 2008 to 116 students in 2010. In 2011, Aggies of Color successfully hosted the conference, bringing 1,006 participants from all over California to the UC Davis campus. With much discussion and consideration, Aggies of Color has enthusiastically embraced the opportunity to take a delegation of 120 students to the 2012 Student of Color Conference at UC Riverside. This year’s theme is “R’ Stories: Embracing our Struggles as Tools for Transformation” and will place student experiences at the forefront of discussion.

S.O.C.C. is the oldest and largest conference for the UC Student's Association, and for non-UCSA associated campuses such as UC Davis. It provides a venue for students of color and allied leaders to strategize around statewide and campus-based actions and build leadership.

S.O.C.C. allows students of color and allies the opportunity to: (1) discuss important issues that affect all UC students; (2) develop and practice leadership, communication, and facilitation skills; (3) meet students from their home campuses with similar interests and ambitions; and (4) network with students from across the UC system, and outside the UC system, to develop a statewide network of support for student activists.

The 2012 Student of Color Conference will be held at UC Riverside on November 09-11, 2012. Our mission will be to bring students together so they are able to engage in and discuss issues regarding racial/ethnic identities and their intersections with the ultimate goal of furthering collective education.

Aggies of Color is fundraising on- and off-campus to subsidize transportation and housing costs. The registered organization has: (1) recruited UC Davis undergraduates to be a part of the delegation, (2) maintained constant communication between UC Riverside and UC Davis, (3) supported UC Davis students wishing to present workshops or facilitate caucuses at the conference, (4) arranged for housing and transportation to ensure that UC Davis be well-represented at SOCC, and (5) fundraised for the conference to make the trip as accessible as possible to students who may not otherwise be able to attend. Funds from the ASUCD Senate will pay for a piece of transportation and housing.

In a time of fee increases and budget cuts, it is increasingly important to build unity across the UC system, not merely within the individual campuses. This conference is an ideal opportunity for UC Davis students to take action in defense of their own education.
