PowerPoint Exercises

Follow these exercises in the order they are presented. They include all of the PowerPoint lessons we covered. Follow the checklist twice. The first time, do the exercises with your notes and textbook closed. After finishing the first checklist, then open your notes and look at the web pages, and check to see that you did everything correctly!

q q Open PowerPoint, make a blank presentation.

q q Choose a blank slide.

q q Switch to Slide View (#3 of the buttons below).

q q Using the “Rectangle” tool on the Drawing toolbar, create a rectangle.

q q Double-click on the rectangle, and then change the Fill Color.

q q Using the “Oval” tool on the Drawing toolbar, create a circle. Make it a perfect circle by holding down the “Shift” key while you draw the circle.

q q Change the fill color of the circle using the Fill Color button on the Drawing toolbar.

q q Click and drag the circle so it is above the rectangle.

q q On the Drawing toolbar, click on the “Draw” menu (far left), and click on “Order.” Click and drag on the blue stripe on top of the submenu, so you create a floating toolbar, as you see below.

q q Change the order of the circle’s layer so it goes below the rectangle.

q q Close the floating “Order” toolbar.

q q Create a new slide. CAUTION: be certain you are making a new SLIDE, and not a new PRESENTATION. Use Control-M, not Control-N.

q q Go to “AutoShapes,” go to “Basic Shapes,” and choose a Smiley Face.

q q Make the Smiley Face Yellow. Change the smile to a sad frown.

q q Using the “Rotate” button on the Drawing toolbar, rotate the Smiley Face 90 degrees (1/4 turn).

q q Using the “Line” tool on the Drawing toolbar, create a line.

q q Double-click on the line, and change the Line Weight to 30.

q q Using the “Arrow” tool on the Drawing toolbar, create an arrow.

q q Double-click on the arrow; change the Line Color to Blue, and change the Line Weight to 60.

q q Select the Smiley Face, Line, and Arrow. Then, on the Drawing toolbar, click on the “Draw” menu and choose “Group.”

q q Create a new slide (#3).

q q Using the “Text Box” tool on the Drawing toolbar, create a text box in the middle of the slide. Write the words, “My Presentation” inside the text box.

q q Click on the border of the text box. Using the Formatting toolbar, change the Font Size to 36.

q q Using the buttons on the Drawing toolbar, change the text box’s fill color, line color, and text color.

q q Using the “Line Style” tool on the Drawing toolbar, change the line (border) of the text box to 3 pt.

q q Move the text box to the top left corner of the slide.

q q Using the Drawing toolbar, create a Shadow for the text box. Using the “Shadow Settings” toolbar, change the color of the shadow to blue.

q q In the middle of the slide, create a new Word Art. Use the word “Hamsters!”

q q Using the Drawing toolbar, create a Clip Art. Choose the “Academics” category, and choose the picture of the two girls graduating.

q q Using the “Picture” toolbar, crop the bottom half of the picture so only the girls’ heads are visible. Use the Brightness and Contrast buttons to change the appearance of the picture.

q q Move the clip art to the lower left corner of the slide.

q q Using the “Insert” menu, insert a Picture (“from file”). Make sure it is a small size. Move it to the lower right corner of the slide.

q q Right-click on a blank space in the slide, and select “Background…”

q q For the background, go to “Fill Effects” and choose a Gradient for the background. Click the “Apply” button.

q q Create a new slide (#4).

q q Right-click on a blank space in the slide, and select “Background…”

q q For the background, go to “Fill Effects” and choose a Texture for the background. Choose a light-colored texture! Click the “Apply” button.

q q Using AutoShapes, Basic Shapes, create a Lightning Bolt shape. Change it to a yellow color.

q q Open “Custom Animation,” and animate the lightning bolt shape. Make the shape “Fly” using the direction “From Top Left.” Use the sound “Explosion” with the animation.

q q Change the “Order and Timing” of the animation, so the lightning bolt’s animation starts Automatically, After 3 Seconds.

q q Switch the view to Slide Sorter View (#4 of the buttons below).

q q Go to the View menu, choose “Master,” and select “Slide Master.”

q q In Slide Master, do a Control-A to select all the text boxes. Then hit “Backspace” to erase them.

q q Right-click on a blank space in the slide master, and select “Background…”

q q For the background, go to “More Colors” and choose a light color for the background. Click the “Apply” button.

q q Using AutoShapes, Basic Shapes, create a “sun” shape. Make it yellow or orange. Use the 3-D menu to change it to a 3-D shape. Then move the sun shape to the top right corner of the slide.

q q Exit the slide master. You should still be in Slide Sorter view.

q q Right-click on Slide #3, and select “Slide Transition…”

q q Choose a “Box In” effect, and set it to “Medium” speed.

q q Choose the sound “Cash Register,” and click the “Apply” button.

q q In the File menu, select the “Save As…” command.

q q Choose a name for your presentation, and save it in a folder that you choose.

You’re finished!

In the GMail that I sent you, you will find a copy of the presentation, with all the exercises done. You can compare your copy with the copy that I made.

CAUTION: this exercise will prepare you for the PRACTICAL test in PowerPoint, but I may also ask PowerPoint Questions of the WEB PAGE test. You must study the web pages and your lecture notes to know the answers to those!
