GENERAL PURPOSE

Under general supervision, an employee in this classification provides a wide range of assistance to garage personnel. Is responsible for performing general tasks in the garage that do not require a mechanic’s certification, including maintaining safe, clean and orderly conditions in the interior and exterior garage area, assisting mechanics with vehicle maintenance and maintenance of small equipment.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

An employee in this position may be called upon to do any or all of the following essential functions. These examples do not include all of the duties which the employee may be expected to perform. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily.

Performs road calls on vehicles bringing them back to garage for necessary service. Shuttles vehicles to and from repair facilities, the garage, City Hall, etc.

Maintains weekly logs and databases, including various service logs, tire inventory, Michigan Department of Environmental Quality information pertaining to monitoring the underground fuel tank and similar data collection using manual and electronic methods.

Assists mechanics with repairs, changing and balancing tires on autos and light trucks.

Maintains tire machine in clean and proper working condition; also maintains tire repair supplies and tire rack.

Maintains garage, machine shop and tool room in a clean, safe and orderly manner.

Assists mechanics with installation and repair of salt augers, plows and spinners on light and heavy equipment. Disassembles to send out for sandblasting and painting as needed at the direction of the mechanics.

Cleans interior and exterior of trucks, heavy equipment and other City vehicles.

Assists with preventative maintenance tasks on vehicles, including checking various vehicular and equipment fluids and replenishes those fluids as needed, changing engine oil, oil filters and air filters, lubricating vehicles and equipment as needed and changing windshield wipers, bulbs/fuses, etc.

Provides assistance with plow and grader blades replacement as needed.

Performs other tasks in order to maintain safe working conditions in garage yard.

Maintains inventory on all garage fluids and lubricants including oil, hydraulic gear oil, anti-freeze and bulk tank fluids.

Maintains fuel island, including maintaining appropriate fluid levels, checking fuel pumps, nozzles and hoses for signs of wear and leakage. Performs pump meter and tank stick readings weekly, maintains and inputs computer data related to the fuel management system. Maintains the appearance of the gas island by cleaning, painting and restocking supplies.

Monitors scrap oil levels and arranges for proper disposal.

Maintains small equipment including lawnmowers, chain saws, concrete saws, large walk behind concrete saws, and the like, including monitoring fluid levels, minor repair and servicing as needed.

Cleans lubricates and stores shop tools and equipment, including but not limited to vehicle lifts, floor jacks, jack stands, transmission jacks and the like.

Picks up needed parts and delivers parts to specialized vendors for repair.

PERIPHERAL DUTIES

Repairs and assembles hydraulic hoses.

Uses forklift to load and unload trucks at the Supervisor’s discretion.

Provides assistance with a variety of tasks to the mechanics as needed.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Transports vehicles to and from repair and service facilities.

Utilize computer and Fleet Management software.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience:

(A) High School diploma or GED equivalent;

(B)  State of Michigan Driver License with a driving record acceptable to the City.

(C) Must possess required CDL license or obtain within 120-day probationary period.

Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

(B) Ability to read and understand basic written/graphic materials such as work orders, maintenance booklets, directions, maps, etc.

(C) Ability to write legibly and to properly fill out certain basic forms.

(D) Ability to perform tasks with frequent and repetitious bending and stooping, lifting up to 50 pounds, climbing to a height of 15 feet or depth of 15 feet and carrying and pulling large/heavy objects. These duties may be required for long periods of time and on a daily basis.

(E) Ability to work outside in all types of weather and on all types of terrain.

(F) Ability to utilize various hand tools and power tools (i.e. power saw, air compressor, ratchet, hammer, rake, shovel, broom, etc.) on a regular basis.

(G) Ability to safely and efficiently transport power equipment (i.e. tractors, lawn mowers, weed trimmers, etc.).

(H) Ability to follow written and/or oral instructions on an independent basis with and without direct supervision.

(I) Ability to operate a motor vehicle safely and effectively in crowded city traffic in all types of weather.

(J) Basic knowledge of computer operations.

(K) Ability to obtain State of Michigan Powered Industrial Truck (forklift) certification (provided by employer).

The employee may occasionally lift or moves up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distant vision, color vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in a garage setting. The employee frequently works near moving mechanical parts and is frequently exposed to temperature changes in and outside the building. The employee occasionally works in areas of exposure to fumes, airborne particles (including dust), toxic or caustic chemicals, and the risk of electrical shock.

The noise level in the work environment is occasionally loud.
