Poetry Analysis Project

Connecting with poetry, as well as writing poetry, is liberating for readers and writings alike. This project will help you to explore a poem and its author and delve into the deeper meaning behind the words on the page. Poetry is a great way for all literary techniques to come together, fluidly in form. This universal art is up for interpretation and it is your job to find a poet and poem that you can connect to personally and connect to the overall theme.

1.  Find a poem which is very meaningful to you, and for which you can find biographical information on the author. Be sure to choose an author that we have not read in class. Check poets.org or poemhunte.com as online resources.

2.  Research biographical information on author, including historical context, if applicable.

3.  Read poem very carefully. Take notes on figurative language, poetic terms and poem analysis.

4.  Begin writing your Poetry analysis paper--

-Include brief introduction to poet or poem

- Brief biographical information on poet

-Analysis of poem, including how it relates to the theme of “beating odds” and “life struggles”

-List ALL literary devices used by poet and give one example for each

- How do these devices help you interpret the meaning of this poem?

- Write a brief conclusion relating the poem’s meaning and included examples of symbolism as it pertains to the poem and real life

5. Visual Aid:

- Including at least 5 vivid images from Poem

-Your illustrations must be representative of the poem, any literary devices, themes, symbols, tone or mood

6.  Citation

7.  Final copy must be 2 + pages and include the paper, the poem, the list of devices, as well as any citations. Staple all of your illustrations and paper together or be creative in combining all the elements.
