Mrs. Williams’ Classroom Disclosure
6th grade Classroom
2015-2016
Philosophy of Education:
My belief is that all students can learn. I know this because I have seen it happen. Being a teacher is an amazing job, and I enjoy watching students transform right before my eyes. Children will learn when the environment is positive. Everyone needs someone who will love them and believe in them. A child’s learning atmosphere must be safe and positive in order for each and every child to learn. My classroom is filled with many wonderful and positive opportunities to learn.
It is my responsibility as a teacher to give every child learning opportunities that will inspire them to set goals, achieve goals and become successful. This will happen differently for every student within my class but I will work very hard to adjust and accommodate to meet the needs of every student. I want all students to be successful as they spend their day with me.
Classroom Management:
My classroom promotes a positive environment while holding students to high standards. I expect students to come to school prepared and ready to learn. I have many motivational systems like a classroom money system and a point system that help inspire students to make good choices. The money and points earned will be celebrated by a class store or auction.
Class Expectations:
Be friendly Be positive Be trustworthy Be in charge of yourself, not
Be helpful Be responsible Be an example others
Grading Policy:
I follow the Davis District grading system using the SMART report (Standards Mastery Report Tool)
3 The student meets or exceeds grade level standards
2The student is below grade level standards
1 The student is far below grade level standards
Homework:
Students will have approximately 60 minutes of homework each night (except Fridays and the weekends). Students are also expected to read 20-30 minutes each night. They will come home with a new reading log on Fridays. They need to read every day Monday-Thursday, and one weekend day either Saturday or Sunday. This log should be filled out by the student and signed by the parents and brought back to school on Friday. Students will also have other homework Monday-Thursday. A spelling test will be given on most Fridays. Science and Social Studies projects will be assigned at different times throughout the year. There will also be monthly Current Events and due for each student.

Reading Program:
The big accomplishment for reading each night for 20-30 minutes is that if they stay consistent with it they should be able to read a book a week, totaling about 40 books by the end of the year. Over the course of the year they need to read 40 books. Thirty (35) books are completely their choice (reading series, same authors, etc). They also need to read 5 books that are from the listed GENRES below. They will write me a short letter each Friday telling me about the book they are reading. I encourage you to have them read in a quiet, consistent place each day. Below is the sample READO paper the students have in their reading journals at school. They are responsible to keep track of it themselves at school and I will be checking it weekly. Feel free to give them encouragement and support at home with selecting and reading the books.
