Dream House

For this assignment you and your partners will design your own dream house. You will be creating a poster sized drawing of the floor plan of your dream house. The dream house should include everything you desire. It will also include geometric shapes.

Part I: Floor Plan Drawing (50 points)

First you must draw a floor plan of your home. This must include measurements and must include at least one of each of the following shapes:

·  Square

·  Rectangle

·  Triangle

·  Circle (or portion of a circle such as a semi-circle)

·  Trapezoid

·  Triangle

Your drawing must have these elements:

v  Each room must be clearly labeled (what type of room it is) and neatly drawn.

·  Rooms required (minimum, you may have others as well)

  • 2 bedrooms
  • 2 bathrooms
  • 1 kitchen
  • 1 dining room
  • 1 living room
  • 1 family room
  • 1 garage

v  Your floor plan must be large and on poster size paper.

v  You must use color to make this dream house appealing.

v  You will use the scale 1 inch = 5 foot

v  Your home should have realistic measurements, and should be something that in which someone could actually live.

v  Be creative and have fun. Make the design imaginative.

Part II: Area Calculations (100 points)

Now that you have drawn the floor plan, you must choose flooring and wall coverings for each room. Make sure the flooring is appropriate for the type of room, for example you would not put hardwood flooring in a garage.

You will need to accurately calculate the area of each room and the areas of the walls in each room to calculate the cost. Use the following guidelines for costs.

Flooring:

Linoleum $1 per square foot

Ceramic Tile $3 per square foot

Hardwood flooring $5 per square foot

Plush carpet $4 per square foot

Contractor grade carpet $2 per square foot

Concrete flooring $1.50 per square foot

Wall Covering

Paint:

Matte (1 can covers 300 square foot) $20 per can

High Gloss (1 can covers 400 square foot) $25 per can

Wallpaper:

Plain (1 roll covers 55 square foot) $7 per roll

Basic design (1 roll covers 55 square foot) $9 per roll

Intricate design (1 roll covers 35 square foot) $12 per roll

Part III: Total Area and Total Cost (50 points)

The final stage is to calculate the total area and the total cost of your dream house.

Bonus: Model Creation (60 points)

This will take you into the third dimension. You can create a 3-D model of your dream home. You may use any materials of your choosing to make your model. Make it quality. Your model must match your floor plan drawing.

The project is due Friday, May 24, 2013.

Each day late is -10 points, no exceptions. If you know you will not be in school to turn the assignment in on time, send it with someone else or turn it in early.
