College and Scholarship Quick Notes
Applying to College
1. Research your college options! These are just a few of the websites where you can conduct college searches: www.cfnc.org (NC schools only),
www.collegeboard.com, www.cappex.com
2. Narrow down your list of schools soon so that you can begin the application process. Typically students apply to 3-5 schools, but you want to be sure that one of them is a “safety” school (a place where you are an above average applicant and feel fairly certain you’ll be accepted).
3. If you have not already taken the SAT or ACT, make sure you are registered for one of the testing dates below.
Register for the SAT at www.collegeboard.com.
Register for the ACT at www.actstudent.org.
Test Date / Registration Deadline / Late DeadlineSAT / October 6 / September 7 / September 21
November 3 / October 4 / October 19
ACT / October 27 / September 21 / October 5
December 8 / November 2 / November 16
Fee waivers will be available in guidance for students who receive free/reduced price lunch. You CANNOT use a fee waiver for Late Registration. When you register for a test, make sure you choose colleges where your scores will be sent. It costs extra to send scores later, and the Guidance office cannot send your scores to colleges!
4. Complete your applications! All college applications are now online. You can apply through individual college websites. For colleges in NC, you can apply online at www.cfnc.org, and a growing number of colleges are now accepting the Common Application found at www.commonapp.org. CFNC and the Common Application are easy ways to apply to multiple colleges!
5. Pay attention to deadlines! Many college application deadlines occur in December, January and February. Mark deadlines on a calendar so that you can easily see when things are due. Make sure to give yourself time to write essays and your teachers time to write recommendations.
6. After you complete your application, go to Guidance to request a transcript. You must have a transcript sent in order for your application to be complete!
Applying for Scholarships and Financial Aid
1. Every senior needs to fill out a Senior Brag Sheet, available in Guidance and on the Parkland Guidance website. Do this as soon as possible, and return your Brag Sheets to Mrs. Sergiacomi.
2. Scholarship information will be available through email, on the Guidance page of Parkland’s website, and on the bulletin board outside of Guidance. Paper copies will be available in Guidance and updated at least once a month. You can also follow us on Twitter @PMHSCollegeInfo
3. Be sure to check each college’s website early in the year. Most large scholarships are offered through individual colleges. Some colleges require separate scholarship applications or have an earlier application deadline if you want to be considered for scholarships.
4. Many scholarships limit the number of applications from each high school. In these cases where nominations are limited you must have a Senior Brag Sheet on file with Mrs. Sergiacomi to be considered for nomination by the Scholarship Committee.
5. All students should complete the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) as soon after January 1st, 2013 as possible. The FAFSA website is www.fafsa.ed.gov. We will happily assist you in completing your FAFSA.
