TITLE: CUSTODIAN GRADE: 2
Summary
This position is responsible for performing routine and special custodial and janitorial functions to the assigned County facilities/buildings to maintain their safe, clean, efficient operation and presentation.
Scope of Responsibility
Individuals assigned to this classification are expected to be competent in their skill area and to perform proficiently and independently those assignments of a regular and recurring nature. Work is normally performed in accordance with established and well-known policies, procedures and practices under general supervision of the Maintenance Supervisor. Supervisor will check progress of work and provide instructions on accomplishing work involving unusual problems or the use of unfamiliar equipment. Individuals will typically be assigned to a regular reporting work site; however, work site assignments will be subject to change as determined by supervisors with no notice requirements.
Typical Duties
1. Clean and service assigned County buildings and facilities, including dusting and polishing furnishings.
2. Mop, sweep, strip, wax, polish, shampoo, buff, and/or vacuum all floors and carpets. using buffers, auto scrubbers, extractors, vacuums, brooms, mops, and squeegees for the cleaning and general maintenance of floors, walls, carpets, furniture, etc.
3. Empty all interior wastebaskets.
4. Clean walls, mirrors, metal and woodwork.
5. Clean and sanitize restrooms and replenish supplies.
6. Assist with inventory control of custodial and janitorial supplies. Perform general maintenance of custodial and janitorial tools and equipment to maintain optimum operation. May perform minor repairs such as changing light bulbs and florescent tubes as needed. Perform minor exterior maintenance such as exterior window cleaning.
7. Report needed facility maintenance and repairs to Maintenance Supervisor.
8. Oversee building security before or after regular business hours.
9. Assist with room set-up and take-down, moving furniture and equipment as needed.
10. Perform work in accordance with sound safety practices.
Qualifications
Requires knowledge of the field of assignment sufficient to perform thoroughly and accurately the full scope of responsibility as illustrated by examples in the above job description.
Minimum Qualifications:
1. High School diploma or equivalent
2. Possess and maintain a valid Washington State driver’s license.
3. Two years experience in commercial or institutional custodial or janitorial work.
Required Skills and Abilities
1. Knowledge of commonly used equipment, tools and substances of the trade.
2. Ability to read, understand and interpret product label information and follow proper use instructions and safety alerts.
3. Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
4. Ability to set priorities and accomplish work activities under indirect supervision within prescribed time.
5. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relations with co-workers and other county employees.
6. Ability to provide status reports and communicate maintenance needs promptly.
7. Ability to interpret alarm systems and follow-up with appropriate action according to procedures.
8. Working knowledge of safety hazards and procedures; cognizance of public safety matters.
9. Ability for continuous physical effort including frequent bending, climbing, squatting, manipulation of and lifting of equipment and supplies.
Essential Functions
1. Ability to perform manual labor.
2. Ability to operate commonly used equipment, tools and substances of the trade commonly used equipment, tools and substances of the trade.
3. Ability to follow oral and written instructions.

Physical Demands and Environment
Requires standing and walking on various types of surfaces, sitting, standing, ability to maintain balance, climb stairs, ladders and inclines, ability to kneel, bend, stoop, crouch, reach, push, pull, twist; requires a sense of touch, finger dexterity, gripping with fingers and hands, lifting and carrying 30 pounds; exposure to chemicals, dust, pollens; ability to hear voice conversations and alarms. Requires far, side, night, color vision, with depth perception. Requires wearing safety equipment such as ear plugs or muffs, respirators, rubber or plastic gloves.
