Our parents are involved in the decisions regarding how the 1% reserved fund will be used for parental involvement. The input was gathered from the 2011-2012 Parent Survey that was sent home March 25, 2011.

· PSE Focus Group – June 6th - 1:30 PM – Parents, staff and community will meet to review the revisions to the PSE Parent Policy and the school compact. Also the group will use this session as a planning for some events and activities for the upcoming school year.

· Parent and Principal Chat –July 24th – 9:30 AM or 6:30 PM – An opportunity for parents to meet the new principal and an opportunity for the principal to share expectations and plans for the new school year.

· PSE Focus Group – August 8th – 1:30 PM – Review plans and implement strategies for volunteers to start working first day of school.

· PSE Sneak-A-Peek - August 9th – 4:00 PM – 6:00 PM – Parents and students get a sneak-a-peek at their teachers and get first day of school information. Parents will have an opportunity to sign up for volunteering.

· PTA General Meeting/Title I Information Meeting/Open House- September 6th – 5:30 PM – 7:30 PM – The PSE PTA will introduce officers and the budget for the year. Then Principal Broadnax will share school data along with Title I information and explain what it means to be a Title I school. Copies of the following documents will be available at the meeting: “What Does

it Mean to be a Title I School Wide Program?”, “2012 - 2013 Parent Involvement Policy”,

“2012 - 2013 School Compact” and the “Parent’s Right to Know”. Parents will be given an opportunity to visit their child’s classroom.

· PSE Focus Group – October 1st – 6:30 PM - 8:00 PM – Parents/Guardians, Staff and Community Partners come together and discuss improvements for school climate and on-going topics that keep our school rising to the top.

· Powder Springs Day – October 6th – 10:00 AM – 6:00 PM – Join the Powder Springs Elementary Family as we “Take it to the Streets” with the “Power Springs Day Festival”. Parents, Teachers/Staff and Students will flash the PSE colors (blue and gold) as we proudly participate in this city-wide event.

· Academics 101 “Getting to the Core of ELA” – October 11th – 8:00 AM – 9:30 AM – Evening Session 6:30 PM – 8:00 PM – This parent workshop will be hosted by PSE Cathy White-Trout, PSE Literacy Coach and Melba James, Parent Facilitator. The workshop will provide information about Common Core English Language Arts (ELA). Parents will be given hands on computer instruction and will be able to find specific information and websites that will assist the families. Light snacks will be served. Childcare will be provided for evening session only!

· PTA/PSE Math Night – October 18th – 6:00 PM – 8:00 PM – PSE families will attend a PTA General Meeting - then Math Night begins! Parents and students will experience three rotations. The first rotation will include a preview of the Common Core Georgia Performance Standards for the second nine weeks. The second rotation the families will be shown both the Singapore Math and Number Talks strategies. The third rotation will consist of various math games in which the families will play. They will be able to take a game home with them in order to help reinforce the student’s grade level standards.

· Parent/Teacher Conference – October 22nd – 26th – Teachers will share progress and information with parents regarding their child. Another opportunity for parents to receive Title I documents. Parents will fill out an evaluation based on their first nine week experience and their conference. Various times will be scheduled.

· Scholastic Book Fair – October 22nd – 26th – Together students and their parents will be able to explore the wonderful world of books. Books may be purchased daily at the following times. Volunteers are welcome to help during these hours.

· Project F.O.C.U.S. – October 30th – 6:30 PM – 8:00 PM – Fathers Offering Counseling Understanding and Structure (F.O.C.U.S) will host their first male volunteer forum. This evening is designed to prepare our men to mentor our PSE boys. This event for “Men only” will be inspired by our very own Area 6 Assistant Superintendent, Rick Beaulieu, as the key note speaker. Men you don’t want to miss this event! A light dinner will be provided – sponsored by a local vendor.

· PTA General Meeting/PSE Science Exploration – November 1st – 6:00 PM – 8:00 PM - The PSE PTA will have their general meeting and then students and their parents will have a night of hands on experiments with microscopes and other lab equipment as they discover the scientist within.

· Guiding Good Choices – November 8th - 6:00 PM- 8:00 PM – The Guiding Good Choices parenting program is a 3-week class for parents and caregivers of elementary and middle school children. The workshops will cover:

- Developing clear family guidelines and expectations for behavior

- Teaching children the skills they need to stay out of trouble while still having fun

- Learning about the nature and extent of teenage drug use and how to prevent this within your own family

- Managing family conflict in a way that maintains and strengthens bonds

- Increasing children’s involvement with the family in the teen years

- Creating a parent support network

The class will be provided free of charge. A light dinner will be sponsored by Success for All Students. Childcare will be available – no infants.

· PTA Mother/Son Black and White Ball – November 10th – 5:00 PM -8:00 PM – The little Princes of Powder Springs Elementary will escort their Mothers/Guardians to the ball. This evening will give Moms and their Sons a chance to dance, eat and bond. An experience never to be forgotten.

· PSE Focus Group – “We’re in This Together” - November 12th – 6:30 PM -8:00 PM - An evening of information where PSE counselors and the school social worker join forces with Cobb County DFACS representatives to share some vital facts that will offer freedom from the myths of these services, but show how they support school staff and families. Dr. Les Cole, Executive Vice President of Northside Hospital Psychological Program along with Viva Price, Community Partnerships for Protecting Children (CPPC) Coordinator for DFACS will be our special guests. A light snack will be served, sponsored by Northside Hospital Psychological. Childcare will be provided – no infants.

· Thanksgiving Feast – November 14th & 15th – Parents will be able to join their children during scheduled lunchtimes for a Thanksgiving Feast. For the menu see the flyer.

· Holiday Ornament Painting - November 26thth – 6:30 PM – 8:00 PM – To celebrate the upcoming holidays, the art program is offering a Holiday Ornament Painting event. You are invited to bring the family and paint as many ornaments as you desire. Students will receive order forms to take home the first of the month and due back before Thanks- giving break; ornaments are $1 each. All proceeds will benefit the art program and keep those mini Rembrandts and Monet students’ hands covered in paint and clay. If you cannot make the event, the ornament(s) will be sent with your student to enjoy painting at home. Happy Holidays!

· Doughnuts for Dads – November 30th – 7:15 AM – 7:45 AM – Powder Springs Students and their dads will receive tips that will enhance and improve their child’s study habits as well as wonderful websites for CCGPS regarding ELA and Math.

· Academics 101 “Getting to the Core of Math” – December 6th – 8:00 AM – 9:30 AM – Evening Session 6:30 – 8:00 PM (Room 602) - This parent workshop will be hosted by Dr. Shanell Butler, PSE Math Coach and Melba James, PSE Parent Facilitator. The workshop will provide information about Common Core Math. Parents will be given strategies on how to help their child(ren) at home. Parents will also be shown how to access Common Core Standards from the district’s website. Helpful websites will be given out to assist with math standards. Light snacks will be served. Childcare will be provided for evening session only!

· PTA Holiday Shoppe – December 10th – 14th – 7:15 AM – 8:15 AM and 2:15 PM – 2:45 PM – The Penguin Patch Holiday Shoppe will give students, parents and staff a chance to engage in the joy of purchasing holiday gifts for family and friends.

· PSE Focus Group – “Learning Without Boundaries” - January 14th – 6:30 PM - 8:00 PM – The Cobb County School District Special Education Parent Mentor Program will share information with families of students with special needs. Guest presenters Ijeoma Ajoku and Judith Steuber will present information on Special Education services, policies and procedures and community resources. They will show us ways of learning without boundaries.

· PSE Focus Group – Build A Parent Survey Workshop – February 4th – 10:00 AM –

12:00 Noon – Parents will have an opportunity to create a survey that will be distributed to all PSE Families to help provide an input in the decision making process at our school.

· PTA Parents Snack Theater – February 8th – 6:00 PM – 8:00 PM – This PTA fundraiser will allow students to serve their parents and friends with a light snack. Ticket prices are 13 yrs. – Adult $10.00, 4 yrs. – 12 yrs. $5.00. Proceeds will be divided between the 4th and 5th Graders as well as PTA.

· Academics 101 “Getting to the Core of ELA” – February 21st – 8:00 AM – 9:30 AM – Evening Session 6:30 PM– 8:00 PM - This parent workshop will be hosted by PSE Cathy White-Trout, Literacy Coach and Melba James, Parent Facilitator. The workshop is part two of "Getting to the Core of ELA" and will focus on reading, writing, listening and speaking in the Common Core. Light snacks will be served. Childcare will be provided for evening session only!

· Black History Program – February 28th – 5:30 PM – 8:00 PM – TBD

· A Muffins for Moms – March 8th – 7:15 AM – 7:45 AM – Powder Springs Students and their mothers will receive tips that will enhance and improve their child’s study habits as well as wonderful web sites for CCGPS regarding ELA and Math.

· Academics 101 “Getting to the Core of Math” – March 14th – 8:00 AM – 9:30 AM – Evening Session 6:30 PM – 8:00 PM – CRCT Test Prep-What can I do to help prepare my child for the CRCT? Sample test questions will be given out along with testing information. Childcare will be provided for evening session only!

· Career Day – March 20th – Students will explore careers during this one-day annual event. Members of the community will be in attendance to present students with a variety of careers.
