lX. Other management/Pest and Diseases Management

Manual pollination is suggested when fruit set is greatly affected by rain, or if there is low pollinator population. The best time to manually pollinate is from 7 to 9 AM. Use fruit fly attractant to prevent fruit fly damage. Cover healthy fruits with fruit bag, and remove deformed or damaged fruits. There should be proper management and monitoring to assure quality fruits.

Insect pest/Disease / Control
Aphids / Lannate, Malathion
Thrips / Dicarzol
Silver leaf white fly / Powder soap, Lannate
Tomato leaf miner / Decis, Xentari
Fruit fly / Golden Crop FFA
Fusarium wilt / Crop rotation

X. Harvesting

Harvesting can be done when fruits meet the standard size base on the varietal characteristics. Usually our varieties start harvesting 45- 55 DAT.

AMPALAYA (Momordica charantia L.)

I. Climatic and Soil Condition

Ampalaya adapts well in hot tropical climate. It grows well and matures early if the temperature is above 25°C. It should be planted in full sun, with adequate water supply. It doesn’t grow well during wet season, or with strong winds. The roots can easily rot in waterlogged conditions. Fruits are also affected by too much rain.

II. Varieties Developed by Known-You Seed Co. of Taiwan

These F-1 hybrid Ampalaya cultivars are well-adapted to Philippine conditions.

Cultivar / Features
Moonrise / Early, productive, good for salad
Moonlight / Early, productive, and crispy
High Moon / Extra early, good for frying, cooking or in salad
Jadeite / Crispy and good for frying, beautiful fruit color
Jade Dragon / Early, good for cooking or in salad
Luxuriance / Early, crispy and straight fruit

lll. Seedling Care

Ampalaya seeds can be planted directly to the field or sown in Agri + Plas seedling tray. The seedlings can be transplanted 7 to 10 days after sowing, or if it has already reached 2-3 true leaf stage. To make seedlings grow uniformly, follow these simple steps:

a.  Soak the seeds in water for 30 minutes.

b.  Cut a little bit of the pointed portion of the seed using a nail cutter.

c.  Sow the seeds in seedling tray with Growell medium and water well.

Crop rotation is recommended after the first cropping to prevent pest and diseases development. Rice or corn can be planted as alternate crops.

IV. Land Preparation

Plow and clean the planting area and make a flat bed on sandy soils and a raised bed in sandy loam or clay soils. Use 5 m between canals, 1 m between plants, 0.5 m canals, and 3 m between plots. The bed should be 15-20 cm high above the fertilized level. Use Agri + Plas silver-black plastic mulch to cover prepared plots.

V. Transplanting

It can be done 7-10 days after sowing. Be sure to water the seedlings before transplanting.

Vl. Fertilization for Every 20 Linear Meter Bed

2 sacks of Organic Matter 150 g Boron

4 kilos Complete fertilizer 1 kg Calcuim Nitrate 150 g Magnesium 150 g Furadan

Though Furadan is not a fertilizer, it is recommended to apply it as basal to control nematodes.

Drenching Schedule

Weeks after transplanting / Calcium Nitrate / Complete
1 / 75 / -
2 / 150 / -
3 / 225 / 75
4 / 75 / 150
5 / - / 225
6 / - / 300

The above fertilizer is measured in grams and dissolved in 16 Liters of water. 7 weeks onward, side dress plants with 1 tablespoon of complete fertilizer twice a month or when needed.

VIl. Trellis Preparation

Use bamboo pegs, ipil-ipil tree or madre de cacao as post for trellis (40

pieces at 2 feet length). There should be 104 pieces of posts at 7 feet height, at

3m x 3m distance. G.I. wire # 16 (10 kg) and 1 roll of culture net (5” x 5” x 14 m

x 90 m) will serve as support for the climbing plants

Vlll. Irrigation and Drainage

Soil moisture should be adequate throughout the early growing period to produce good plant growth. Irrigation should be applied frequently to prevent the plant from injuries in dry soil. Water consistently when flower buds start to form. It is important to maintain dryness on the area between plots. Also, pay attention for proper drainage during wet season.
