Exploring Barriers to Exclusive Breastfeeding in Latino Mothers.

This study will explore the experiences of Latino breastfeeding mothers regarding choices and behaviors related to exclusive versus partial breastfeeding. Level of acculturation will also be described.

Description: In preparation for a clinical trial, this pilot study will survey pregnant women regarding current use of technology such as computers, the Internet, social networking sites, text messaging, and interest in receiving health care via computer technology; current plans for and past breastfeeding practices; current and past tobacco use and interest in smoking cessation; current weight status; perceptions regarding overweight in current children; depression; and verbal/physical abuse.

Promoting and Supporting Breastfeeding in Adolescents.

The overall objective of this randomized clinical trial (RCT) was to test developmentally sensitive interventions to enhance breastfeeding decision-making and increase the initiation and duration of breastfeeding among disadvantaged adolescent mothers. The trial tested the effects of a comprehensive prenatal, in-hospital, and postpartum educational and support intervention provided by a lactation consultant – peer counselor team

Funding source: N/A. The Perceived Experience of Peer Counselors in Providing Social Support and Perinatal and Breastfeeding Education to Pregnant and Parenting Adolescents In a Randomized Controlled Trial

This was a descriptive study involving the peer counselors who were part of the intervention team in the clinical trial “Promoting and Supporting Breastfeeding in Adolescents”. Individual semi-structured interviews were used to gain understanding about the perceived experience of peer counselors’ training, duties, and interventions; the perceived impact of the peer counselor interventions on the study participant outcomes; and whether the peer counselor experience influenced their personal health concepts and advancing career.

Rojjansrirat (PI) 09/01/2009- 12/31/2010

International Lactation Consultant Association. Feasibility and Reliability of In-home Telehealth Breastfeeding Support.

This study evaluated the feasibility and reliability of telehealth methods for assessing and providing lactation support in women’s homes, as well as the perceptions of women who receive breastfeeding support via videoconferencing. Telehealth in this context is new and evaluation is needed to guide delivery of breastfeeding support and consultation using videoconferencing.
