Van Buren High School Science Club Plant 100 Trees At Chilton Creek Boat Landing
Van Buren MO – The Van Buren Science Club, under the leadership of teacher, Fred Fox, volunteered to plant 100 young trees at Chilton Creek Boat Landing at Ozark National Scenic Riverways. “The trees greatly enhance the park experience both for Current River boaters and other visitors,” said Superintendent Reed Detring.
The Sycamores, Hornbeams, Spice Bushes, and Button Bushes for the planting project were purchased from Forest Keeling Nursery. Forty-four high school students volunteered a total of 110 hours to plant the trees at a savings to the park of $3135.00. In this flood prone area, the trees will stabilize the soil, prevent erosion, maintain the water clarity of the Current River, and lessen flood impacts on the boat ramp. “We appreciate all the work the young people accomplished to preserve the river’s water quality and help protect the area from floods,” said Superintendent Detring.
Ozark National Scenic Riverways preserves the free-flowing Current and Jacks Fork Rivers, the surrounding natural resources, and the unique cultural heritage of the Ozark people. For more event information, phone (573) 226-3945-4236 or visit the park’s website at www.nps.gov/ozar.
