Colorado Northwestern Community College is seeking a dynamic individual to teach and mentor students in building leadership skills through participation in an Outdoor Leadership Certificate Program. In addition, the position entails coordinating and facilitating low and high ropes course sessions specifically designed to meet educational learning outcomes. Outdoor Leadership Instructor
SECTION I - Background Information:
DEPARTMENT: Arts & Sciences
DIVISION: Instruction
CLASSIFICATION TITLE: Faculty 10 month contract (1.1 FTE)
SCHEDULED WORK HOURS: 40 per week
CAMPUS LOCATION: Rangely
TITLE OF SUPERVISOR: Chair of Arts and Sciences, Rangely Campus
SECTION II - Summary of Major Functions:
Teach outdoor leadership, outdoor skills, outdoor safety, and challenge course facilitation courses related to an Outdoor Leadership Certificate. Coordinate outdoor leadership educational activities in support of CNCC academic programs. Develop student’s leadership skills using outdoor challenges and the natural environment as the setting. Develop students’ respect for and stewardship of our natural resources. Serve as the CNCC Vision Challenge Course Coordinator, including developing and facilitating New Student Orientation activities on the course, coordinating sessions for the college community and external agencies, and training and supervising facilitators. Manage the institution’s outdoor leadership equipment and collaborate with faculty, staff and the Student Activities Department to enhance place-based education and high levels of student engagement.
SECTION III - Primary duties:
1.  Teach a variety of Outdoor Leadership courses, outdoor skills classes and Challenge Course Facilitation applicable to the Outdoor Leadership Certificate (approximately 15-20 credit hours per academic year).
2.  Meet all scheduled classes and be fully prepared for each class meeting.
3.  Evaluate students’ work in a thorough and equitable manner.
4.  Work with Learning Community instructors to ensure completion of leadership activities by students enrolled in the Outdoor Leadership Program track.
5.  Work closely with CNCC faculty to help organize outdoor field experiences associated with academic courses and ensure quality and availability of necessary outdoor leadership equipment.
6.  Coordinate CNCC Vision Challenge Course activities including scheduling sessions for both internal and external constituencies, designing curriculum based on participant goals, hiring facilitators, coordinating set up and break down of the course, and maintaining necessary equipment.
7.  Maintain the safe working order of the Challenge Course and challenge course equipment, schedule and oversee yearly safety inspections, and work with CNCC Facilities to ensure routine maintenance and repairs are completed as appropriate.
8.  Participate in the planning stages for New Student Orientation. and serve as the Challenge Course Leader.
9.  Oversee check out procedures to coordinate and manage use of all outdoor equipment by academic courses, student life, faculty and staff and community members.
10.  Coordinate and assist in developing yearly Comprehensive Development Plans and Budget Requests for the Outdoor Leadership Program, including the Challenge Course and outdoor equipment.
11.  Actively engage in the CNCC assessment of student learning initiatives and complete assigned assessment activities.
12.  Keep accurate records and maintain up-to-date files on course policies and syllabi.
13.  Actively serve on College committees as necessary.
14.  Become familiar with the community college philosophy and the policies/procedures of CNCC.
15.  Keep informed of current educational trends, both in general and in one’s own specific field.
16.  Understand the student group being served and work toward improving student’s skills.
17.  Refer students needing special academic or personal assistance to appropriate personnel.
18.  Accept assignments in evening programs, occupational programs, and student-life activities when appropriate.
19.  Participate in the annual Honor’s Banquet and Commencement exercises.
20.  Perform other duties as assigned by the Chair of Arts and Sciences and/or the Dean of Instruction.
SECTION IV - Important & essential knowledge, skills & abilities:
1.  Knowledge and experience in various outdoor activities such as swift water rafting, rock climbing, ice climbing, caving, mountaineering, backpacking, etc.
2.  Ability to teach courses or secure training to teach courses leading to certifications in outdoor skills areas (i.e., Leave No Trace, Wilderness First Responder, Swift Water Rafting Tech I, SCUBA, Challenge Course Facilitation, etc.)
3.  Knowledge in the maintenance and use of a variety of outdoor recreation equipment.
4.  Ability to collaborate effectively with others.
5.  Proven effectiveness in developing strong partnerships with internal and external constituents.
6.  Strong organizational and communication skills.
SECTION V – Education, Competencies, Degrees, License, Certificates or Registrations:
Required:
Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university in a reasonably related field.
Demonstrated knowledge and/or certifications to teach outdoor leadership and skills classes.
Preferred:
Master’s Degree from an accredited college or university in a related field
Teaching experience in outdoor leadership and skills.
Certifications to teach outdoor skills courses.
Experience with facilitating low and high element challenge courses.
SECTION VI – Working Conditions/Equipment/Machine Operation:
Must be capable of strenuous physical activity such as hiking, rowing, climbing, belaying, and standing for
long periods of time.
Must be able to lift a minimum of 50 pounds.
Requires maintaining a valid driver's license.
Must possess the ability to use and learn a range of computer software packages and various technology as appropriate to the position.
