DENVER BRONCOS QUOTES (5/3/17)
CORNERBACK BRADLEY ROBY
On the Broncos picking up his fifth-year contract option
“It feels good just to get that out of the way. Just to know that I’ll be here for another year is always good. I was happy to see it. I really like being here. I know how those things go. I think 24 of the guys in my [draft] class also got extended, so I take that as a compliment. I take that as: I fulfilled whatever they thought about me and what they projected me to be when they I got drafted. I just look at that as a good thing.”
On any early changes that Defensive Coordinator Joe Woods implemented
“Not yet. You can kind of start to tell when the fire starts. So far, he’s been great. We have new coaches so it’s about getting on the same page with them. Communication-wise, signal-wise, and just all the little things. So far, it’s been very good and I think it’s a good position for him. I think he was very good at coaching us as corners, but I think he’ll be even better by not having to worry about just coaching us, while he looks over everything.”
On improvements he hopes to make this upcoming season
“Just keep working on technique. No matter how old you are, technique is going to be the main thing that’ll keep you in position to make plays. Especially in my position. Just keep learning and keep hustling. Keep making plays. Just focusing on the little things. No matter how much success I get or we get, I just have to continue to focus on the little things, and I’ll be good.”
On adding RB Jamaal Charles to the team
“I think that’s a great addition, a really good addition. I think that he’ll help us out immediately. When we played against him, I thought he was one of the best in the league, if not the best. When we watched film on him and played against him and felt his cuts and things like that, I thought he was the best. It’s a great pickup. I also don’t want Broncos’ fans to get me mixed up [with him]. I know, the dreads (laughing). Everyone wanted to call me [Former S] Omar [Bolden] back in the day and [Former S David] Bruton. I hope they can see the difference for sure.”
On what Charles can bring to the team
“He’s a mismatch with every linebacker. He’s a mismatch for a lot of safeties. I know [Offensive Coordinator] Coach [Mike] McCoy is going to do a great job of working him in. [Quarterbacks Coach Bill] Musgrave is going to do a great job of suiting the offense to his talents and putting packaged plays for him in that he’ll be good at. I think it’s a great addition for us.”
On having former Broncos OLB Demarcus Ware and CB Champ Bailey at practice recently
“It’s always good to have those guys here. They’re like the role models on a pedestal. You look at those guys and say, ‘That’s how I want to be.’ I used to call D-Ware my role model every day because he really was a role model to all of us. I wasn’t with Champ, but I definitely aspire to be like Champ. I want my career to go like his. It was good to have those guys around to show that they’re behind us. Anytime they can talk to us and tell us stuff, I’m always listening. If you’re not listening to those guys, then who are you listening to?”
On not getting much as much recognition playing behind CBs Aqib Talib and Chris Harris Jr.
“No, it’s human tendency to think those things, but I’m not really worried about it. At the end of the day, I know that I’m in the position where I can continue to learn and I can also go out there and show what I can do as well. It’s not like I’m not playing at all. I also get to learn behind those guys. Yeah, I’m not getting the accolades and all the other stuff I could be getting, but I got a Super Bowl ring in my second year, and I’m getting better every year. I know that at the end of the day I’m going to get what I’m supposed to get if I continue to stay to course and stay positive by not thinking selfishly.”
On improvements he wants to achieve with the secondary
“Just play to our standard. We’ve been the No. 1 passing defense in the league for two years straight…I think that’s our biggest goal to do it, being No. 1 pass defense for three years straight. Just to really show, in the history, they can go back and say that the Broncos’ secondary was one of the best, if not the best secondary that every played. And the numbers don’t lie. I think that’s just us staying to our standard and not backing down and not regressing at all.”
On his thoughts of the new offensive additions to the team
“Offensive line wasn’t our best position last year and we upgraded that. I don’t know anything about [TE Jake] Butt. I’m not expecting much because he went to Michigan (laughing). I’m playing. I’m sure he’s a great player. I think Jamaal Charles is a great addition as well. With all the guys we have coming back along with a different scheme that I think will fit our players a little bit better than last year’s scheme, we’ll see. Only time can tell.”
On how he spent his offseason
“I was in L.A. a lot, just training. I was trying to stay out of the way. I didn’t want to do too much. I definitely enjoyed it. But I was training to get my body right. Last year I felt like I didn’t train as well. Coming off of a Super Bowl, I wasn’t as focused as I should have been and I learned from that. This year, I’m way ahead of that.”
On former CB Kayvon Webster leaving in free agency
“The guys like [CBs] Lorenzo Doss and Taurean Nixon, this is definitely an opportunity for them to step up and crack the lineup. Kayvon was a great addition and we’re going to miss him because he was great on special teams as well, if not one of the best special teams guys in the league. That’s going to be a spot that we’re going to have to fill for sure. It’s sad to see your brother leave, but I think he went on to a better opportunity for him.”
