Marco Figueira and Ensemble plays Jobim at Flushing Town Hall

Featuring: Marco Figueira - guitar/vocals; Miho Nobuzane - piano; Clyde Bullard - bass; Matt Kane - drums; Scott Anderson - guitar; Oscar Feldman - sax. Just in time for Valentine’s Day, some of the most romantic music in the world! Brazilian singer, guitarist & songwriter Marco Figueira and ensemble feature familiar samba and bossa nova - influenced by Antonio Carlos Jobim, who created the wonderful Brazilian Bossa Nova in the 1960’s. The Jobim Songbook, the wonderful Brazilian Bossa Nova that was created by Antonio Carlos Jobim in the 1960's that spawned a dance craze and gave the world a new refreshing, melodic and romantic sound. Brazilian guitarist, vocalist and composer, Marco Figueira brings to life the beauty of some of Jobim's most famous songs with a group of Brazilian musicians, singing in the original language that the songs were written, Portuguese. Singer, guitarist and songwriter Marco Figueira was born in Carangola, a small town in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil. His love of music found its expression early on, when he began to sing and play guitar at the age of eight. A move to Rio de Janeiro in his teen years presented Marco with the first real opportunities for serious musical study. He studied classical guitar privately with Luis Antonio Perez, a well-known Rio teacher, and later enrolled at the prestigious Pro Arte Music Conservatory. There, he studied classical guitar with Leo Soares and popular guitar with Henrique Lissovsky. During this time Marco also studied voice with Heloisa Madeira, and sang in the Pro Arte choir, whose eclectic repertoire ranged from Beethoven to Villa Lobos to Jobim. In 1988, Marco fulfilled a long-held dream of moving to New York City. It was here that he quickly established himself as both a solo performer and bandleader, playing for a devoted following in a wide variety of venues. New York afforded Marco the chance to study and play with some of the top performers in Brazilian and American jazz. He studied guitar with Paulo Andre Tavares, Romero Lubambo and Paul Meyers, and voice with Datevik Hovanesian. Brazilliance, Marco’s first recording for Blue Toucan Music, is the result of that serendipitous meeting of musical minds. At Flushing Town Hall, 137-35 Northern Boulevard, (at the corner of Linden Place), Flushing, NY. Jane Sandes Exhibit at Agora Gallery

Chelsea’s Agora Gallery will feature Brazilian artist Jane Sandes in Unbound Perspectives. Sculptor Jane Sandes creates introspective pieces that examine the confines and dimensions of geometry as viewed through the variables of lines, contours and volume. Forms are complicated by the ever-present interplay of light, which enriches and deepens the visualization of the work. Each sculpture rises up at unexpected angles, turning in on itself and then reaching outward again to face the world. The sharp contrast of light and shadow—depending on the viewer’s perspective—adds a real dynamism to each piece. What results are geometric forms that transcend the confinements of line and space to convey a great energy of movement and spirit. Reception: Thursday, February 10, 2011, 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. Gallery Location: 530 West 25th St, New York City. Gallery Hours: Tues – Sat, 11a.m. - 6 p.m. http://www.agora-gallery.com/artistpage/Jane_Sandes.aspx

The Eternal Now, by Mario Cravo Neto at Throckmorton Fine Art

THE ETERNAL NOW - Mario Cravo Neto, until March 5th. Throckmorton Fine Art is pleased to offer the exhibit, “THE ETERNAL NOW.” At the time of his death last year—at the age of only 62—Cravo Neto was widely held to be Brazil’s greatest photographer. In 1980 and again in 1995, Cravo Neto received the award for Best Photographer of the Year from the Paulista Association of Art Critics (APCA). In 1996, he received the National Prize of Photography from Brazil’s National Arts Foundation (Funarte). And in 2004, he received the Mario Pedrosa Award from the Brazilian Association of Art Critics. In addition to his recognition in his native Brazil, Cravo Neto’s photography was—and continues to be—exhibited internationally. Cravo Neto was born in Salvador de Bahia, a cornucopia of Afro-Brazilian culture. He was the son of a sculptor, and though he began working in photography at the age of 17, he has been eloquently described as “the son of a sculptor, he became a sculptor.” Cravo Neto is unmistakably a fine arts photographer, a “curator’s choice.” Although his subject matter is figurative, his images always display a spatial conception of depth of field, with a fascination for volume, form, and space. His photographs, thus, are “sculpture-like” having imbued a deep aesthetic sense to the image. Cravo Neto’s photographs are also notable for his use of light. Most photographers, working like Cravo Neto in black-and-white seemingly begin with white and add, selectively, black. Cravo Neto began with a black field and carefully—and sparsely—allowed for the emergence of light. The resulting images are unique—and powerful. Cravo Neto’s subjects include portraits and torsos, frequently with the addition of animals or natural objects. Although most of his models were Brazilian, many of African heritage, Cravo Neto’s corpus of work is wide-ranging, including, for example, portraits of the principals and associates of the Royal Danish Ballet, commissioned by the Frederiksborg Museum in Denmark as a pictorial essay in praise of dancing. These images also bear the imprint of “the son of a sculptor who became a sculptor.” Throckmorton Fine Art takes pride in long being Mario Cravo Neto’s New York representative. This homage to his work offers vintage photographs from the 1980’s – 1990’s. At THROCKMORTON FINE ART, 145 East 57th Street, 3rd Floor, New York City.
