DESTINATION INFORMATION:
Dublin, Ireland:

Dublin happily remains an intimate capital that mixes elegant Georgian buildings, wrought-iron bridges, a battalion of booksellers, and more than 1,000 pubs. The heart of the city is the River Liffey, which runs east to west, splitting Dublin neatly in two. The more affluent Southside has a greater concentration of sights, and it can seem a world apart from the more working-class Northside. North or south, Dublin is compact and easily navigated, making it a great walking city.

Despite being roughly a thousand years old, Dublin is most definitely a 21st-century town. The cobblestoned streets, the splendid towers of Trinity College, and the gracious squares of Georgian Dublin still echo with history—but the high-tech boom of the past decade has radically changed the face of the city, particularly in the shining new Docklands area. Today’s Dublin is a confident, cosmopolitan hub filled with excellent restaurants, world-class theaters, and raucous nightlife—and, of course, storied old pubs, where you can encounter funny, gregarious locals in their natural habitat.

Currency: € EUR

Voltage: 220v

Language: English and Irish (Gaelic)

Tipping: 10% - Tipping is common, but is still not as expected (or as generous) as in the USA. If a restaurant adds a service charge (usually 10%) no tip is required. If not, most people tip 10% and round up taxi fares. For hotel porters €1.00 EUR per bag is acceptable.

Weather Conditions:

Average weather temperatures for Dublin in June range from a high of 63°F (17°C) and a low of 50°F (10°C). Moderate rain is common in June.

Dining:

If your idea of Irish fare starts and stops with corned beef and cabbage, Dublin restaurants will surprise you. Ireland's capital now has no shortage of excellent dining options, from traditional Irish cuisine, updated versions of it, and international fare.

Clarenbridge oysters, Carlingford Lough mussels, Ballina wild smoked salmon, Donegal crab—the menus of the top restaurants in Dublin are now full of some of the most flavorsome seafood on the planet.

Dubliners dine later than the rest of Ireland. They stay up later, too, and reservations are usually not booked before 6:30 or 7 pm and up to around 10 pm. Lunch is generally served from 12:30 to 2:30. Pubs often serve food through the day—until 8:30 or 9 pm. Most pubs are family-friendly and welcome children until 7 pm. The Irish are an informal bunch, so smart-casual dress is typical.
