Course Description:

The curriculum is designed to prepare students to be able to gain entry into the medical field at an entry level Nurse Aide position. We will cover the following units this semester:

First 6 Weeks 1.00 Understand the role, function, legal, and ethical responsibilities of a nurse aide within the healthcare system

2.00 Understand communication skills, interpersonal skills, and physical care skills that promote mental health and meet social and special needs of residents in long term care.

3.00 Understand infection control within nurse aide range od function.

Second 6 Weeks 4.00 Understand nurse aide skills related to residents’ vital function and movement.

5.00 Understand nurse aide skills related to residents’ hygiene, grooming, skin integrity, and living environment needs.

6.00 Understand nurse aide skills needed to provide for residents’ nutrition, hydration, and elimination needs.

Third 6 Weeks

7.00 Apply nurse aide skills by providing hands on resident care during a 40 hour (minimum) clinical experience in an approved long term care facility.

Policies and Procedures

Starting and Dismissing Class

1.  Students will check the task center to obtain bell- work and notes at the beginning of class.

2.  Students will sharpen pencils before class.

3.  Be prepared for a fast-paced class.

4.  All students must be in seats prior to the bell ringing and have begun bell work.

5.  Teacher will begin class instruction after attendance is taken.

6.  Teacher will always dismiss the class.

Completion of Classwork and Homework

·  All work must be submitted by the due date. If the student submits work 3 days of the due date, the student will receive a lesser grade. Work not submitted within 3 days grace period, will constitute a zero grade for work. All work will be placed in the task center in the designated class box.

Make- up Work

1.  Student is responsible for obtaining missed assignments from the task center board from the day in which they were absent.

2.  Assignment must be dated with due date and date of student’s return to class.

3.  Assignments are to be submitted the day after the student’s first day returning to school.

4.  If the student is absent when an assignment is due, the student must submit the assignment the next day of return. Exceptions will be considered only with a note from the parent explaining the situation of the absence that prevented the student from completion. (i.e., serious injury/illness, out of town for family emergency).

Turning in Homework/Classwork (Be sure to complete due to grading)

·  All homework will be placed in the appropriate class box in the task area. If a paper is submitted any other place, I will not be responsible for lost or misplaced papers. All submitted work MUST contain student name (first and last name), date of assignment, and the class name and the period that you attend. Place all this information in the upper right hand corner of your paperwork. All handwritten assignments must be completed in a neat/legible handwriting.

Missed Test/Quizzes

1.  Quizzes may or may not be announced in class.

2.  A review will be given on the day prior to the test.

3.  Students who miss the review will still be required to take the test.

4.  Students who miss the test will take the test the day they return. Make- up tests are scheduled after school so as not to interfere with learning of new material.

5.  Tests that are not made up will result in student receiving a zero in the grade book.

Notebooks

·  All students must maintain a notebook (1 1/2 to 2” binder) for this individual class. This will be graded a minimum of 1 time each 6 weeks. It will contain 5 sections:

a.  Table of Contents

b.  Section 1: Bell-work

c.  Section 2: Notes/Vocabulary/Handouts

d.  Section 3: Exit Tickets

e.  Section 4: Quizzes with a Grading sheet in front

f.  Section 5: Test with a Grading sheet in front

Leaving the Classroom

·  All students must have a pass to leave the classroom and sign out on the log in the task area prior to leaving. Students will not be allowed to leave the room for the first and last ten minutes of class as per Student Handbook. Limit time out of class in order not to miss any important information.

Attentive/ Sleeping

Sleeping on the job is grounds for termination in the workplace.

1.  Students must stay awake and remain active in class.

2.  No student should have their head lying on the desk, propped up, or covered.

Cell Phone Policy

Students will enter the classroom each day and immediately silence phones. Then the students will place their cell phones into the cell phone caddies which are attached to their desks. The cell phones shall remain snapped into these caddies during instructional time unless authorized by Ms. Ewell.

1st Offense: Electronic device will be confiscated and placed in “electronic device jail” on Ms. Ewell’s desk. Student-teacher conference will immediately follow.

2nd Offense: Electronic device will be confiscated and placed in “electronic device jail”. Contact between teacher and parent/guardian will be made. Student will also attend detention at the teacher’s discretion.

3rd Offense: Electronic device will be confiscated and placed in “electronic device jail”. Student will lose electronic device privileges for remainder of the semester. Student will be required to place device in “electronic device jail” upon entering the classroom daily. Contact between the teacher and parent/guardian will be made. Office referral will be completed and sent to the proper administrator.

Failure to comply with the “3 Strike Rule” will result in an office referral for each offense that follows.

Classroom Rules/Consequences

Rules:

1.  Be on time: Be in your seat and ready to work when class begins.

2.  Be prepared: Have all necessary supplies daily such as: paper, pencil, pen, etc.

3.  Be respectful: Always be courteous, kind, and respectful to others.

4.  Be involved: Participate in classroom activities.

5.  Be attentive and undistracted: follow the cell phone policy.

6.  All Onslow County and JHS rules apply.

Consequences:

First Offense: Verbal Warning

Second Offense: Detention with Ms. Ewell

Third Offense: Teacher/Parent Conference

Fourth Offense: Referral Written/ Sent to the Office

Severe Disruption

Any severe disruption will not be tolerated. Everyone must work towards success for themselves and the class.

I believe instruction should occur in an environment conducive for learning for it to be effective. This setting requires good order, appropriate discipline and safety. My job as the teacher is to make it known to the student and their parents/guardian the expectations of behavior and any consequences that may result due to violations of those expectations. This will require a commitment from me, as the teacher, to adequately inform the student and promptly correct any deviations, while appropriately rewarding the expected behavior.

The student is responsible for knowing and obeying the rules and procedures set forth. Therefore, students who persistently disrupt the learning process for others may be removed from the classroom to be given the opportunity to modify their behavior.

In conclusion, I feel, for instruction to be effective, the teacher, the student and their parents must jointly work together as a team. The rules, procedures and consequences should be fair and appropriate to the situation, which will lead to an environment conducive to success!
