CIS 4280

Homework 2

(Topics 5 – 8)

Due: April 13, 2017

Note: this assignment can be done individually or in pairs

Do-It-Yourself (DIY) Labs

For each DIY labs, list the tool(s) you need to use and the steps at a high level necessary to accomplish the objective (i.e., there is no need to list every click and keystroke). In some cases the steps will document how you arrived at your answer. If appropriate, use the tool(s) to achieve the objective. Test your solution to see if it solved the problem.

The goal of these exercises is to get you to apply material you have learned in the labs and also to explore new features of the tools from the labs.

Note: Any DIY lab, even if it looks like it is just posing a question, must have steps to show how you arrived at your answer.

Design Labs

For each design lab, propose a solution. Note that this does not include a set of steps. Document your solution with a combination of text and graphics.

Do-It-Yourself (DIY) Labs

(Note: Stated users already exist. Use your knowledge of topics 5 – 8 to answer these questions).

1. / Your company has an organizational unit named Engineering. To help you administer the network you want Ann to be able to manage the existing accounts in engineering but not be able to create new accounts. You want Billy to be able to create, administer, and delete user accounts in Engineering.
2. / Which domain controller has the PDC emulator master role?
Important: Do not change any of the operations masters.
3. / Create a text file named Test.txt in the root of the C drive. You have been told all new users that log on at Computer-X should have a shortcut to Test.txt on their desktop. All the other settings that go into effect for new users now should stay the same.
You are allowed to sit at Computer-X to perform this task. [Hint: this does not involve group policies or other complicated items.]
4. / You want to allow a user, Mkt22, to reset passwords and force a change of password at next logon for all users in the Marketing organizational unit. You do not want him to have other administrative abilities in this container or to have any administrative abilities in other organizational units.
5. / You work for an academic department that has one physical HP Color Laserjet 1600 and one faculty member is currently writing a 900-page textbook. Instead of printing just a draft of a chapter, he sometimes prints the whole book. Help his frustrated colleagues by restricting this user to printing to the HP Color Laserjet 1600 (see Chapter 6 Labs) only from 8:00 PM to 8:00 AM for large jobs. The user should be able to print small jobs during regular hours. The other users will obviously need to print during the working day.
Please note that your solution will need this faculty member to cooperate, i.e. there is no parameter in the system that checks the number of pages in a print job.

Design Labs

6. Your company's main office is in Denver with branch offices in Minneapolis and Fargo. Each location has 1000Base-T networks and two subnets. WAN connections are currently T1 lines. The company is using one domain with several organizational units at each location. The company wants good logon and replication performance as well as fast response time for Active Directory queries.
Design the replication structure of Active Directory to meet the stated goals. Specify the location of critical computers in your design. Use a diagram to show your design. [Hint: we are not looking at domains here.]
