Course Description

This course is an overview of 20th and 21st century dance history in the United States and Europe. This course will explore dance as an artistic, performing art form that includes but is not limited to modern, ballet, jazz, tap and ethnic dance. This course will also focus on developing an appreciation and a respect for all dance forms.

Course Requirements

Students are REQUIRED to bring the following materials to class:

A BOUND notebook AND pen/pencil and notebook paper for in-class writing

assignments to be turned in every class period. There is no textbook for this course.

Evaluation and Grading Procedures

There will be 4 (four) multiple choice/essay exams- one exam per month. Each exam will have 50 questions representing 40% of the final grade.

Biographical Sketch a (2)page typewritten-word-processed paper is required.

that describes in-depth the artistic contributions of a 20th or 21st century artist

The sketch will describe the contributions that the artist has made to dance.

This assignment is worth 20% of the final grade .

Video- Dance Critiques written in class will represent 30% of the final grade.

The critique will be turned in at the end of each period. There will be a total of 14 . critiques.

The critique will be scored as follows: 10-9=A 8-7=B 6-5=C

Class Participation and Contributions Meaningful classroom participation

will be subjectively evaluated by the instructor. This component of the course will

represent 10% of the final grade.

GRADING SUMMARY

4 Multiple Choice Essay Exams 40% of the final grade

Biographical Sketch 20% of the final grade

In –Class Video Critiques 30% of the final grade

Class Participation 10% of the final grade

Make-up Examinations must be completed within a week of the scheduled exam.
