Job Description for School-Health C-FNP or PA-C

JOB TITLE: School-Based Health Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant

REPORTS TO: School Health Director, Medical Director, and Administrator

TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS

Work is performed primarily at a school-based clinic. Involves contact with students, parents, school staff, school-based clinic staff, NRHA staff, and health profession students. Most work is during the school day, some late afternoon and evening work may be required.

DUTIES

The Family Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant will provide primary care health services under the guidance of supervising physician within the guidelines and constraints of the WV statutes. Duties will include the following:

  1. Screen patients to determine the need for medical attention.
  2. Review patient records to determine health status.
  3. Take patient history.
  4. Perform physical examinations.
  5. Perform development-screening examination on patients.
  6. Record pertinent patient data.
  7. Make decisions regarding data gathering and appropriate management and treatment of patients being seen for the initial evaluation of problem or the follow-up evaluation of a previously diagnosed and stabilized condition.
  8. Request laboratory studies.
  9. Collect specimens for blood analyzing.
  10. Identify normal and abnormal findings in history, physical exam and commonly performed laboratory studies.
  11. Initiate appropriate evaluation and emergency management for emergency situations, for example, cardiac arrest, respiratory distress, injuries, burns, hemorrhage.
  12. Perform clinical procedures such as:

·  Venipuncture

·  Electrocardiogram

·  Care and suturing of minor lacerations

·  Control of external hemorrhage

·  Application of dressings and bandages

·  Removal of superficial foreign bodies

·  Cardiopulmonary resuscitation

·  Visual screening

·  Carry out sterile techniques

·  Read skin tests

·  Pulmonary function testing

·  Injections

·  Immunizations

·  Removal of impacted cerumen

·  Anterior nasal packing for epistaxis

·  Incision and drainage of superficial skin infections

·  Excision of minor superficial skin lesions using only local anesthesia and follow-up with appropriate histology.

  1. Provide counseling, education and instruction regarding common patient problems.
