The meeting was called to order at 6:33 p.m. by Dr. Rich Miller.
Staff Liaison Transition
Michelle Rozman shared with the committee that she is assuming staff liaison duties effective 2017.
New Dentist Receptions Update
Staff shared that PDM Planning Committee has agreed to combine the Fifth District New Dentist Reception with the Welcome Reception at Pennsylvania’s Dental Meeting. The Welcome Reception will take place at Troeg’s in Hershey on Thursday, April 20 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. The PDM Planning Committee will allow the NDC to purchase at cost tickets for new dentist attendees from Districts 4 and 5. Committee members agree it would be a good idea to combine the receptions.
Staff shared the at cost ticket price is $45.66 per ticket. The committee agreed to purchase reception tickets for all new dentist attendees, instead of only purchasing tickets for new dentist attendees in Districts 4 and 5. Dr. Jim Tauberg, PDA Trustee Liaison, also serves on the PDM Planning Committee. Dr. Tauberg will inform the PDM Planning Committee of the NDC’s decision to purchase tickets for all new dentist attendees (1/17NDCDA1).
The committee discussed the Ninth District New Dentist Reception, which will be held in fall 2017. Staff informed the committee that the reception cannot be held in conjunction with the 2017 Mission of Mercy (MOM-in-PA) event.
The committee discussed the format for the reception. To limit the risk of attendees leaving after they eat and skipping the CE portion altogether, committee members agreed the CE portion should be offered in two segments, with a break in between to serve refreshments (1/17NDCDA2). Committee members agree the reception should include alcohol, but limit two drinks per person (1/17NDCDA3).
Dr. Thakkar suggested a potential speaker, Glen Hernandez. Dr. Thakkar said she would get in touch with Glen Hernandez and forward a copy of his flyer to NDC members (1/17NDCDA4). Committee members also suggested Camille Kostalac-Cherry, CEO, as a potential speaker.
Other suggested topics include insurance coding or staff management. Staff was directed to post a thread on the SoNet for committee members to generate ideas for potential topics and speakers for the CE course, with preference for courses that will provide CE credit (1/17NDCDA5).
Interview and CE Prep Program Update
The name of the program had been changed to CV Success. The program is scheduled for Thursday, March 30, which is the same day as the University of Pittsburgh ADA National Signing Day event. Staff shared that the mock interview portion has been removed from the program outline due to concerns about time limitations.
The committee discussed the audience for the event. Committee members agree both members and nonmembers should be invited to attend (1/17NDCDA6). Dr. Nielubowicz suggested that during the panel portion, staff or a speaker should announce that membership applications are available for any nonmembers who wish to join (1/17NDCDA7). Dr. Thakkar informed the committee that Student Lobby Day is scheduled for March 25-28 in Washington, D.C. and it’s likely a number of ASDA members from Pennsylvania will attend. This could potentially affect the attendance at CV Success.

New Dentist Membership Enticement – Dr. Tauberg
Dr. Tauberg expanded on his post from the SoNet regarding potential benefits that would entice a new dentist to join the tripartite. He wanted to generate some ideas to share with the BOT at the January meeting. Dr. Carlin offered several ideas on SoNet:
1. Survey D3s and D4s about what would entice them to join ADA/PDA.
2. Survey nonmember new dentists.
3. PR campaign to raise awareness about PDA’s advocacy/lobbying efforts.
Dr. Nielubowicz said it would be a good idea to survey nonmember new dentists. Dr. Miller suggested that PDA be more transparent about what PDA and ADA do for dentists. He said when he was a student, he was not aware of the benefits PDA offers to dentists and dental students. Dr. Miller suggested more frequent posts on Facebook and presentations to dental students. Dr. Tauberg said he would take the committee’s suggestions to BOT for further discussion (1/17NDCDA9).
