Target Audience

This workshop is for substance abuse counselors, clinical counselors, and related mental health professionals seeking to learn about cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and its applications to individuals with substance use disorders and other mental health issues. This workshop is designed to meet the criteria of an evidenced-based therapy with the substance abuse population in order to earn or maintain the LCAS, CSAC, LPC, and CRC credentials.

Course Description

This training provides a foundation of knowledge in CBT related to serving clients with substance use disorders and related mental health issues.

The following content areas are included in this training:

· Principles underlying CBT.

· Substance use disorders (SUDS) from a CBT perspective

· Common cognitions and cognitive distortions with individuals with SUDS.

· Client criteria for utilizing CBT.

· CBT interventions.

· A six-step CBT model.

Workshop Schedule

All classes begin at 9:00 a.m. Saturday and end by 5:00 p.m. with breaks after every 1 ½ hours of training.

Professor, Substance Abuse and Clinical Counselor education program, Dept. of Addictions and Rehabilitation Studies, East Carolina University (ECU). Dr. Goodwin has worked in the substance abuse, mental health and rehabilitation counseling fields as a clinician, counselor educator or clinical supervisor since 1968.

Workshops are sometimes led or co-led by qualified associates.

PARC

PARC is a professional association of clinical substance abuse, mental health, and rehabilitation counselors/ psychotherapists. Membership is open to professionals holding a graduate degree in a mental health discipline. PARC also has a student membership category.

Professional Conferences and Workshops

· Annual conference every spring offering 10 credits for LPC, LCAS,& CRC.

· Workshops offered 3 times/year in ethics, CBT, HIV/AIDS, and clinical supervision (for CCS & LPC-S).

Member Dues

· Professional member annual dues are $30.

· Student annual dues are $15.

· All memberships run from January through December. Dues are half-price, if joining between July 1 and December 30.
