WEST ROWAN HIGH SCHOOL PERCUSSION ENSEMBLE PERFORMS FOR ELEMENTARY SCHOOL STUDENTS

Recently the West Rowan High School Percussion Ensemble traveled to Reidsville, North Carolina to perform for three elementary schools in Rockingham County. The performances were sponsored by the Junior Service League of Reidsville. The high school students, led by West Rowan band director Daniel Trivette, performed on non-traditional, “found” instruments in the style of the performing group STOMP. During the concert, Mr. Trivette had the elementary students describe a percussion instrument, leading them to discover that a percussion instrument is something that makes a sound when it is struck. Encouraging the students to explore their homes in search of new instruments, the Percussion Ensemble used everything from pots, pans, spoons, milk jugs, a hand mixer, and a box of spaghetti to styrofoam cups, newspapers, phone books, posterboard and trashcans… or simply nothing at all other than their own bodies to perform. Selections were mostly rehearsed compositions by Row-Loff Productions but also included a fair amount of improvisation. As a follow-up to the concert, students at Lawsonville Avenue Elementary and members of the West Rowan Percussion Ensemble are integrating writing into their curriculum as they correspond with each other about the experience. The West Rowan Percussion Ensemble is the same high school group that traveled to local schools and retirement communities last spring performing on a Javanese gamelan from Indonesia and has a tradition of including unusual and unique percussion experiences in addition to their concert percussion studies.

SOCIAL NETWORKS ARE THE R&D TEAMS OF THE FUTURE

She covered a variety of professional learning networks and emphasized that harnessing the wisdom of crowds is the future of improving educational practices. An ASCD blog post highlights some of her ideas as well as the session's Wikispace. The post also asks readers how they are using Web 2.0 to network with colleagues, and what benefits, resistance or challenges have they witnessed among educators.
