Leadership Framework

Modules for middle managers

LSIS provides programmes for leadership development across the range of levels of leadership in the learning and skills sector. The provision for those in middle management roles has recently been re-designed to enable greater choice, flexibility and personalisation. Four major leadership themes have been identified which form the core of the framework:

·  Personal development as leader and manager

·  Leading people

·  Leadership, vision and direction

·  Leading quality Improvement.

The modules are available for first line managers with the option of Chartered Management Institute (CMI) accreditation at level 7. Each module comprises 30 hours of blended learning, including pre-course activity, two days of face to face input, and additional online learning with the option to complete a piece of work for assessment for those who wish to register for the CMI qualification (additional registration fees apply).

Key learning outcomes for each of the modules are as follows:

Personal development as a leader and manager (6 credits*)

Participants will:

·  Evaluate the skills necessary to achieve personal and organisational ambitions.

·  Assess the gap between existing skills and future skills necessary to achieved desired outcomes.

·  Construct a personal development plan to focus leadership development.

·  Implement and reflect on the development plan.

·  Understand impact of the cultural, political, ethical landscape on personal effectiveness as a middle leader.

·  Apply strategies for achieving a satisfactory life/work balance and understand the importance of staff well-being.

·  Demonstrate enhanced skills in co coaching and reflective practice.

·  Provide constructive and challenging feedback at appropriate level and depth to peers.

Leading people (7 credits*)

Participants will:

·  Understand the relationship between strategic management and leadership

·  Analyse the concept of managers as effective leaders

·  Analyse the concept of leaders as effective managers

·  Analyse the balance needed between the demands of strategic management and the demands of strategic leadership

·  Understand leadership principles that support organisational values

·  Evaluate the role of the strategic leader in the creation of the organisation’s vision, mission and values, and in the communication of these to others

·  Analyse how personal energy, self-belief and commitment impact leadership styles and their application in the strategic environment

·  Discuss how ethical leadership engenders empowerment and trust, and identify its impact on organisational practice

Be able to understand leadership strategies and the impact on organisational direction

·  Evaluate transformational leadership and identify its impact on organisational strategy

·  Evaluate transactional leadership and identify its impact on organisational strategy

·  Evaluate situational leadership and identify its impact on organisational strategy.

Leadership, vision and direction (7 credits*)

Participants will:

·  Demonstrate the use of a range of tools/models to support the identification of the environmental influences on the UK further education and skills system and discuss how organisational specific legal, regulatory and ethical requirements impact on strategic leadership demands

·  Critically analyse the historical and social context, including concerns and expectations in which their organisation is operating and the impact this has on the culture of the organisation and its strategic leadership

·  Evaluate current and potential national and local policies and initiatives relevant to their work and organisation

·  Critically review the vision, mission and values of the organisation and the relationship to its cultural setting and the impact upon its strategic leadership

·  Investigate their organisations’ strategy and direction and its link (or otherwise) to national and local policy objectives

·  Identify and critically evaluate the role key stakeholders have in the strategic direction of the organisation

·  Using a specific policy initiative, explore the challenges of strategy implementation and leading change, in particular, evaluating different leadership styles and the relationship between strategic leadership and strategic management.

·  Discuss why leadership styles need to be adapted in different situations and evaluate the impact on the organisation

·  Evaluate two differing leadership styles, determine situational variables which could cause a change in leadership strategy and analyse this strategy to support organisational direction.

Leading quality improvement (10 credits*)

Participants will:

·  Evaluate the applicability and usefulness of general principles, concepts and practices to both strategic and specific quality improvement issues within the learning and skills sector.

·  Present information that is critical and evaluative using appropriate measures for quality outputs/impact/benefits and effectively communicate these to a range of stakeholders.

·  Demonstrate skills of professional discourse and collaborative learning which encourage innovation and creativity.

·  Reflect upon their leadership strengths and areas for development in delivering a team/organisational quality improvement strategy.

·  Successfully complete an action research work-based project which offers critically evaluative commentary on issues relevant to a quality improvement issue within their organisation.

*To achieve an Award or Certificate at level 5 a specified combination of modules must be completed based on the following credit values

Award = 6 credits Certificate = 13 credits

Please note that these modules are eligible for LSIS Accounts. However, additional fees are payable to CMI by those wishing to register for a qualification.

The framework is also offered to learning and skills sector organisations as an in-house option for groups of staff or as a collaborative arrangement with other providers.
