Important Concepts

· Review of MLA documentation style

o Double space, first line indent, left justified name and course, center title

o Footnotes used to further explain. Footnotes double spaced, first line indent

o Inline footnotes give author(s) and page numbers

o Works Cited page lists sources, alphabetical

o Last name and page number used as a header

· How to change margin settings

o File/ Page Setup select margins

· Adjust line spacing

o Select sentences to change

o Right-click, select Paragraph and choose spacing

o OR, select Format/ Paragraph and choose spacing

· Use Header to number pages

o View/ Header and Footer

§ Click Right Justify to place page number at right

§ Click on Insert Page Number icon

§ To the left of the page number enter last name

§ To view header select: File/ Print Preview

· Shortcut keys for formatting

o For Bold, Underline, Italics (WD 87)

· Indent paragraphs

o Use top slide marker on ruler to set first line indent

o Use bottom slide marker to set hanging indent where first line is at the left margin and the following lines are indented. Used for Works Cited page.

· AutoCorrect feature

o Automatically corrects. For example: force first word of each sentence to be capitalized. Use Undo icon to reverse action

o Tools/ AutoCorrect can be used to add entries and or create exceptions

· Add a footnote

o Insert/ Reference/ Footnote

o Modify a style

§ Right click in footnote text area

· Select Style, click Footnote Text if necessary

· Modify/ then select font and double spacing icon

· Select Format/ Paragraph/Special/ First Line

o After footnote has been created you may select the footnote text, right click and select Paragraph and then change style. However, each footnote would have to be changed in this manner.

· Insert a symbol automatically (see WD 106)

· Insert a manual page break

· Create a hyperlink

o Enter web address. To navigate use CTRL-click

· Sort selected paragraphs

o Select Paragraphs

o Table/ Sort

· Go to a specific location in a document

o Click on Browse button on right vertical slide marker

· Count the words in a document
