MICRO PAVE IS ALL THE RAVE

DON’T BE FOOLED

What is Pave? What is Micro Pave?

CONCERNS WITH MICRO PAVE SETTINGS

WHILE MOST JEWELERS TELL YOU WHAT THEY THINK YOU WANT TO HEAR, WE RATHER EDUCATE OUR CUSTOMER SO THEY CAN MAKE AN INFORMED DECISION.

What is the difference between Pave and Micro Pave?

PAVE: It is a very low-tech style of setting in which a goldsmith will drill or form holes into the selected area of a jewelry item and then place the diamonds into the holes and then with another tool, form tiny beads of metal from around the edge of the diamond and then carefully push these beads of metal over the edge of the diamond to hold the diamond in the hole. The desired effect is to obtain an area that looks like it is paved with diamonds, with as little as possible metal showing.

MICRO PAVE: The micro-pave setting style in which very small round diamonds are set into a design that has multiple tiny little prongs perfectly formed in the prototype or wax.

There is much misuse of the term Pave. In fact, the word has incorrectly become nearly a ‘generic’ descriptor of any ring with small side diamonds.

CONCERNS WITH MICRO PAVE SETTINGS

Micro pave diamonds are prone to fall out more easily than traditional setting techniques:

(A) Some micro pave designs may have 100-200 diamonds, which gives many more opportunities for a diamond to fall out.

(B) The amount of metal holding these small diamonds are very small and any direct hit on one of these small prongs or diamonds could easily dislodge a diamond.

(C) It is common for professional cleaning methods (specifically, ultrasonic & steam cleaning) to dislodge micro pave set stones.

Micro pave designs are harder to keep clean: YES (see C above)

Micro pave rings are harder to size: YES, due to the small prongs and their lack of strength to withstand many size changes.
