Post # 1 Newsletter Editor AMVETS Post #1 Commander

Adjutant: J. E. “Gene” Foster Rob Rogers

Post 1 for July served as “host post”!

Post 1 was honored to have officers and guests from Sons of AMVETS National as well as Ladies Auxiliary National to visit our Post. Squadron 1 hosted several functions for the national officers and guests. Post 1 Ladies Auxiliary put together an attractive luncheon with options for several activities.

More about the Post kitchen . . . Progress is being made. The old floors were all torn out and new sub-flooring installed. The walls were washed and painted. There is a professionally installed, new ceramic tile floor and a professionally installed, new 3-bay stainless steel sink. In the next few days, other appliances will be installed. Stop in a have a look. It doesn’t look like the same kitchen!

Sales of the popular 3-digit calendars will begin in August instead of October this year. There is a reason for the early start; competition between posts has been increased. In the past, the post that sold the most calendars got recognition at convention and a plaque – won by Post 1 the last 4 years. But that’s all changed. This year, the post that sells the most calendars will get at convention either 1 night free on their hospitality room or 1 night free for a delegate room. In addition, for every other post that sells more than 50 calendars, they will be entered into a drawing. The winning post will get two convention banquet tickets. Besides those great prizes, everyone who has a calendar book has multiple chances to win money! From $15 to $100! But the real winner is the Department of Maine AMVETS Service Foundation and the deserving high school kids we send every November to Freedoms Foundation in Valley Forge. People buy the calendars for themselves as well as for gifts and special occasions. At Post 1, calendar book sales will continue until almost Christmas. Our bartenders have the calendars for sale at $15 each. And the bartenders are competing for individual prizes. So buying a calendar helps in several ways! The calendars on sale now are effective from January 1, 2016 through June 30, 2016.

Our next Post meeting will be 0900, Sunday, 16 August 2015. There are several items on our agenda not the least of which is a vote to change Appendix B of our Post Constitution and Bylaws. That section deals with officer duties. The motion before us:

AS IT IS CURRENTLY: “The 2nd Vice Commander is responsible for: Hiring and firing bar tenders”

The proposed modification to the above description of duties and responsibilities that will be voted upon will change:

“When hiring or replacing bar tenders, 2nd Vice Commander duties include advertising, interviewing, and recommending in priority order, prospective bar tenders to the Post Executive Board. The Executive Board will approve any subsequent hiring. Removal or firing bar tenders will continue to follow established guidelines contained in this Appendix B.”

A simple majority of AMVETS voting at the 16 August meeting will result in a decision.

We are taking a break and have not scheduled any Wednesday meetings for July or August. Our next regular meeting will be Wednesday, September 2nd. Meanwhile, keep up the good work and be sure to report your hours and activities that benefit the Auxiliary or the Post. Your efforts are always appreciated and noteworthy – so take a moment and turn is a service report.

Like the Ladies Auxiliary, we too have no regular meetings scheduled this summer.

Don’t forget; every Friday night is Game Night at Post 1. Happy hour prices! Food! Prizes! 50/50!
