Prerequisite
Math 23 or 25 with a minimum of grade of “C” or qualification by testing and assessment (ECC)

- Textbook: Elementary Algebra: Concepts &Applications, Bittinger –Ellenbogen-Johnson-
9th Edition (optional)
- MyMathLab Student Access code (required) in order to access all assignments. You can purchase from the publisher online www.coursecompass.com or from the bookstore.
- Scantron 882-E (The green scantron with 50 questions on each side) for exams.
- #2 pencil, scientific calculator. If you plan on taking Math73 or 80, you should obtain a calculator with xy, ex, and lnx functions.
Calculator will be allowed in class after Exam 1. You may NOT use a cell phone or any other device that contains a calculator for quizzes and exams. Your calculator must be just that, a calculator. Calculator may not be shared.

Course Description
This course is elementary algebra includes the study of real number solutions and applications of linear equations, quadratic equations, linear inequalities, and systems of linear equations. Other topics include coordinate graphing of linear equations, factoring techniques, and simplification of rational and radical expressions.
Course Objectives
- Use the specialized vocabulary describing the real number system and its properties as well as the fundamentals of algebra
- Manipulate (evaluate, simplify, or factor) algebraic expressions, including expressions with fractions and radicals
- Solve linear equations and inequalities, systems of linear equations, and quadratic equations
- Solve various application problems which feature the mathematics under study using elementary modeling techniques
- Graph linear equations and systems of linear equations on a coordinate plane, isolating features such as intercepts and slope
SLO (student learning outcomes)
SLO #1 Application Problems Students will be able to recognize linear and quadratic equations in a given context, and use mathematical reasoning and problem solving skills to solve authentic, real world application problems.
SLO #2 Solving Equations and Manipulating Expressions Students will be able to use numerical and symbolic representations of mathematical ideas to simplify or solve linear, quadratic, rational, and radical expressions or equations.
SLO #3 Visual and Graphical Methods Students will be able to use graphical methods to represent linear and quadratic relations as well as systems of linear relations and to find solutions to linear and quadratic equations, as well as solve systems of linear equations.
SLO #4 Articulating Mathematical Reasoning Students will be able to articulate the mathematical reasoning used in a variety of problems, orally or in writing.
Course organization
- Students are expected to read through the indicated sections before each class meeting. This will help to get the maximum benefit from the class discussion.
- Cell phones, pagers, MP 3 players, and all other electronic devices must be turned OFF during class. Laptop, listening to the music, texting is not allowed during my class.
- No food, no drink. Allow small bottle of water.
- Please do not sleeping in class or partaking in non-math activities.

Attendance
Attendance will be taken every class session. Students are responsible for any material/announcements missed in class regardless of their presence including being aware of the status in class. Students are expected to be present on time at all class meetings and to actively participate. It would be a good idea to get the phone numbers of two classmates for this purpose. Withdrawal from the class through Admissions Office is the student’s responsibility.
Homework
All homework will be done and submitted online through Course Compass. Online Homework is due every Sunday by 11:59 PM. Students will probably spend 4-8 hours each week on homework, some more, some less. Try to spread it out over the week, rather than do it all the night before. The homework is interactive, meaning you can get help, view an example, and see the solution worked out in detail, step by step. There are also instructional videos available of an instructor giving lectures and working out problems from all topics we cover in the class. It’s like having “a professor in your computer”. Absolutely no late homework will be accepted.
Quizzes
There will be 10 online quizzes. Online quizzes will be done and submitted online through Course Compass. Online quizzes are due on Sunday by 11:59 PM; see the class schedule for exact dates. If you do your homework, you should do well on all your quizzes. You have 2 attempts a total of 60 minutes (due in one session) for each online quiz and only the highest score is counted.
Exams
- There will be 3 exams and a comprehensive final exam. All exams are closed notes and books.
- Questions on exams and Final will be based on examples worked in class or problems assigned for homework. Final is comprehensive.
Make up
During the semester you can miss only one midterm exam and the score will be replaced by half the score of the Final. In any events, documents will be required to validate your absences. . Final exam cannot be taken early for any reason. Missing the Final Exam will receive an F. Do not plan vacations that will require missing this day and time- No exceptions can be given.

You can check your grade on the Course Compass website. If you find a grade discrepancy, inform the instructor within one week after the grade has been recorded. Failure to report any grade errors in a timely manner (within 1 week of the assignment due date) will result in no change or action taken by the instructor.
