MARY FITZGERALD SQUARE TO ERUPT WITH THE SOUNDS OF THE BACK TO THE OLD SKOOL BEATS

Eight celebrated SA DJs including Black Coffee share the bill with their international counterparts

Some of South Africa’s most celebrated DJs – including award-winning Black Coffee, “Godfather of SA house” DJ Christos and three-year-old social media sensation and SA’s Got Talent winner DJ Arch Jnr – join an impressive international line-up at Back to the Old Skool.

This global celebration of House music takes place at Mary Fitzgerald Square in Newtown in Johannesburg on Saturday, February 27 with international superstars Roger Sanchez, David Morales, Jazzie B and Todd Terry already announced on the bill.

Also joining the South African contingent are DJ Ganyani, Bob Mabena, DJ Mbuso Phezulu, Sishisoul and Fistaz Mixwell.

Black Coffee – currently in the running for three 2016 Metro FM Music Awards and already a South African Music Award (SAMA) winner – is regarded as one of South Africa’s best house DJs. Sidestepping Afro-house clichés and stage-managed highs in favour of restrained sophistication, Black Coffee’s penchant is for true Afropolitan house: home-brewed but trendsetting, fashion-conscious and future-focused.

DJ Christos is a legendary DJ and one of South Africa’s most respected house producers, widely credited for laying the foundations for the SA dance scene’s flourishing platform. Often called the country’s “Godfather of House”, Christos Katsaitis was responsible for releasing some of SA’s most ground-breaking artists including Boom Shaka, Lebo Mathosa, Shana, Daw and Black Coffee. His deejaying prowess has been showcased on multiple mix CDs including Club Classics, Wicked Sounds, Magic Rhythms and Real Tone Cuts.

DJ Arch Jnr became a social media sensation when he was first discovered by social media users after his family started posting videos of the toddler showing off his talent on a mixing deck in January last year. The three-year-old DJ from Alexandra then went on to win SA’s Got Talent and capture the hearts of a nation.

DJ Ganyani – nominated for a 2016 Metro FM Music Award for Song of the Year for Talk To Me – has achieved recognition and respect for his mixing flair at most of the hottest nightclubs in South Africa and globally. He has produced a number of hit albums and performed alongside many of House music’s biggest names.

Bob Mabena has had an extraordinary career and celebrated 25 years in the entertainment industry last year. As well as hosting a wide variety of television shows and presenting on major radio stations, Mabena – who is now a presenter at Kaya FM – also spins the discs.

Sishisoul’s journey into the world of music started in 1986 as a school DJ. This music lover and collector describes himself as an “ol' skool Disc Jockey” who loves the warmth of vinyl and the feel when playing at a party. Soul in the music is the base at which he chooses his collection whether it finds expression in jazz, house, mbaqanga, rock or samba.

Fistaz Mixwell has performed in top nightclubs around the world. He is regarded as a formidable force in the South African entertainment industry.
