Map of Ship-Trap Island

(This activity is designed to help you really understand the contrast between different parts of the setting, and how that symbolizes the contrast between the men, and the overall theme that Richard Connell is exploring in his short story.)

You are a mapmaker specializing in islands. Your task will be to create a colored map of Ship-Trap Island and plot Rainsford's trail. Using information from the text and your mapping skills, create a map (complete with a legend) that shows the main events of Rainsford's journey as they pertain to the plot of the story. Label all of the locations, traps, and other landmarks. Create a line that traces his journey from the yacht at the beginning to the bedroom at the end of the story.

____ Compass Rose (indicating direction)

____ Key (explains labels)

____ Rainsford's path from ship to the island from beginning to end and keyed to the events listed below.

____ General Zaroff's "palatial chateau" (surrounded on 3 sides by a high cliff)

____ The various kinds of terrain (swamps, forest, hills, mountains, etc)

____ All of the tactics/traps Rainsford uses to escape Zaroff

____ The cliff Rainsford jumps from

____ Accuracy - Locations should accurately reflect details from the text.

____Neatness - the map should be easy to read.

____*Contrast – Find a creative way illustrate the contrast between the wild, untamed, and savagery of nature, and the sophisticated, elegant, and civilized creations of man. (This is very important)

____Creativity - the student added in interesting touches to the map (High "A" range if all other requirements are fulfilled)

Event/Action Summaries used to trace the plot

You are to write short descriptions summarizing each of the following events from the story. Each summary should consist of a description of the action, and how it relates to some conflict within the story. Each summary must be keyed to a location on the map.

Essential Requirements: The map must contain all elements, and be produced on a poster sized scale. It should include a neat way of attaching the event/action summary to the bottom of the poster so that when the map is displayed, the viewer can also stand and read the event summary without removing it from the poster. Create it so that the summary hangs below the map, It should not obstruct the view of the map or take up valuable real estate.
