We are constantly reviewing: grammar and its rules, spelling and its rules, literary elements, punctuation and its rules.
Learning Targets for the week:
· I can reflect through writing.
· Language Standard 2.a Demonstrate command of the conventions of Standard English capitalization, punctuation, and spelling when writing. A. Use punctuation (comma, ellipsis, dash, and hyphen) to indicate a pause or break. B. Use an ellipsis to indicate an omission
· 2.c Form and use verbs in the indicative, imperative, interrogative, conditional, and subjunctive mood.
· Writing.8.4.Produce clear and coherent writing in which the development, organization, and style are appropriate to task, purpose, and audience.
Word of the Week: mitigate – to make milder or less or painful
Ex. The nurse tried to mitigate the suffering of the injured child by using extreme caution while bandaging the wound.
Literary Term of the Week: business letter

· University students will be teaching today (This was supposed to have taken place last Wednesday; however, we had a snow day.)
· Pre-test on verb mood ( a new concept)
· Power point
· Group work
· Verb mood consists of:
· imperative – give a command, ex. Al, clean your room.
· indicative – makes a statement, ex. Al needs to clean his room today.
· interrogative—asks a question, ex. Have you cleaned your room yet, Al?
· conditional—if not then, ex. If Al had cleaned his room, he could have played.
· subjunctive—a wish or dream, ex. Al wishes he were finished cleaning his room.

· Summative assessment over Verb Mood.
· Begin work on persuasive business letter. (formative assessment)
Friday, March 15, 2013
· Students will be given two business letter writing prompts.
· They will choose one of the prompts
· Students are to keep in mind their persuasive techniques they have been taught
· They will write a business letter
Rotation:
· Begin Unit 3 in Word Wisdom Vocabulary theme for this unit: Communication
· Informational text: Serious Sounds: A BooK Review
· Scholastic/Scope March 11, 2013 video on sleep
· Read article from Scholastic/Scope March 11, 2013 entitled pages 10 -13
· Summative work (8 multiple choice and 2 open-response)
· Interact with words from unit pgs.57 - 61
· Scholastic Scope The Race Against Death
· Students will be given work on this text.
