Psy 481 Project 2 Lab 1 2 marks

Your CFO Account Due: Wed June 18

This assignment MUST be done individually.

In order to host a webpage on your CFO account, you will need to have activated your CFO Account. If you have not done so already, go to the following webpage to obtain instructions: CFO Account Instructions. Start at the UNLV homepage and click on Computing; scroll down and click on Student Computing Help Desk; click on CFO Account.

This lab will show you how to create and maintain your web page through the UNLV Computer Lab computers. If you would like to learn how to view, download, and/or upload files for your web page at home, you should learn about NetStorage and/or WS_FTP. NetStorage is a Java-based applet enabling users to upload or download files through a web browser and is recommended if you are not familiar with FTP. WS_FTP: is a free FTP program supported by the Student Computing Help Desk. To find information on both of these, start at the UNLV homepage and click on Computing; scroll down and click on Student Computing Help Desk. From there go to CFO Account > Using Your CFO Account > Accessing CFO Account Off Campus.

This handout contains information about:

·  your home directory

·  opening files in your home directory

·  saving files in your home directory

·  checking your home directory disk quota

·  hosting web pages from home directory

·  viewing web pages from home directory

Your Home Directory

Every account is assigned 100mb of storage space (disk quota) on the Computer Facilities Office network server. This storage space is available only to the account holder and can be accessed both on and off campus. The Home Directory is indicated by the H:\ drive.

If you would like to learn how to view, download, and/or upload files to your Home Directory from home, you should learn about NetStorage and/or WS_FTP. Instructions on these are given on the CFO website, and instructions on how to get to the appropriate webpage to learn about these are given above.

Opening Files in Your Home Directory

When a student logs into any station on campus which utilizes the Novell authentication, their specific Home Directory will then be mapped as the H:\ drive.

1.  Double-click on My Computer.

2.  Double-click on the H:\ drive. (Figure 1)

3.  Double-click on the appropriate file. (Figure 2)

4.  Students can also open the file inside a software program by browsing to the H:\ drive.

In order to open a file, the appropriate software must be installed on the computer. For example, you cannot open a Microsoft Access database unless Microsoft Access is installed on the computer station in use.

Check Your Home Directory Disk Quota

Each account is assigned 100mb of storage space. You cannot exceed this limit. To check how much space you have used:

1.  Log onto a computer in one of the computer labs.

2.  Click Start / Student Utilities / Home Directory Information.

3.  A hard drive icon with a checkmark will appear in the System Tray. Placing the mouse cursor over the icon will indicate the storage space used.

·  Green indicates under 50% total usage.

·  Yellow indicates between 50% and 80% total usage.

·  Red indicates over 80% usage.

Hosting Web Pages From The Home Directory

Students have the ability to host web pages over the World Wide Web via their Home Directories.

1.  Log onto a computer in one of the computer labs.

2.  Browse to the Home Directory or H:\ drive. (Figure 5)

3.  Create a folder titled: public_html. (Figure 6)

4.  Place all images and .htm/.html files inside the public_html folder.

Make sure to name the first page or homepage index.htm. If the first page on your website is not called index.htm, the web browser will not know which file it should start with and your website won’t work at all.

View Web Pages From The Home Directory

Once you have put your files in the H:/public_html directory, they are immediately viewable via the World Wide Web.

1.  Open any web browser.

2.  In the address bar, type the following url: http://complabs.nevada.edu/~username (Figure 7)

Substitute your CFO username for ~username above. For example, if the student's CFO username is johndoe, then the correct url would be, http://complabs.nevada.edu/~johndoe
