Lab 5 – Experiment Design

Geology 3265

Hillslopes

In this lecture we saw a claim that angular, coarser grains have a steeper angle of repose than rounded finer grains. In this Lab we will design and carry out experiments to determine the Angle of Repose of subrounded detrital grains, in a range of sizes. Angle of Repose, according to Bloom, is related to the density, surface area and shapes of the particles, and the coefficient of friction of the material.

  1. Write down a general description of how you will proceed.
  1. Give a list of the equipment and supplies you need.
  1. Write down a list of steps you will take.
  1. Try your experiment with different samples of aquarium gravels. What problems did you run into?
  1. Is there any difference in the angle of repose for the different samples? Any overlap in your observations? Are the means of measurements far apart?
