LEADERSHIP UPDATE of the Southeast Region

Volume 6, Issue 4 April – May 2011

ONE WEEK in JERUSALEM

Thirty hours, three planes and one bus ride later, Peggy and I arrived in Tel Aviv, Israel for a one week Holy Land pilgrimage. It was the trip of a lifetime, and our only regret was that we hadn’t done it earlier. When we read the Bible now, instead of glossing over the names of places and geographical references, images of specific locations come to mind and we are better able to connect Old and New Testament geography. Even though most of the sacred sites don’t look as they did in Jesus’ day, it was still awe inspiring to trace His footsteps, and we grasped a bit more deeply the tensions and passions He felt with each miracle, teaching and confrontation.

Whether you have already been, or will one day have the opportunity to go to Israel, the good news is that each of us can take an all expense paid trip to the Holy Land whenever we read the Gospels. Although there is scholarly debate as to the exact timing of some Passion Week events, I challenge your congregation to follow in the footsteps of our Lord Jesus, and read about the One Week in Jerusalem that changed the world forever:

Palm Sunday: Triumphal Entry into Jerusalem: Luke 19:29 – 44

(also Matthew; Mark and John accounts)

Monday: Clearing the Temple: Matthew 21:12 – 17 and Mark 11:15 - 19

Tuesday: Teaching: Matthew 21:18 – 25:46 (also Mark & Luke accounts)

Anointed: Matthew 26:6 – 13 (also Mark & John accounts)

Wednesday: Judas’ Plot: Luke 22:3 – 6 (also Matthew & Mark accounts)

Maundy Thursday:

Passover / Last Supper / Enroute to Gethsemane: John 13 – 17

(also Matthew, Mark & Luke accounts)

Gethsemane Prayer & Arrest: Matthew 26:36 – 56 (also Mark, Luke, & John)

Sanhedrin & RomanTrials: Matthews 26:57 – 27:31 (also Mark, Luke & John)

Good Friday: Crucifixion, Death & Burial: Matthew 27:27 – 61

(also Mark, Luke & John accounts)

Saturday: Tomb sealed: Matt 27:62 - 66

Easter Sunday: Empty Tomb: John 20:1 - 18 (also Mark, Luke & John accounts)

Emmaus Road: Luke 24:13 – 35

Jesus Appears to the Apostles: Luke 24:36 - 49
