Knox Presbyterian, Tiverton, Ont

Congregational Profile

Purpose and Vision

Knox Presbyterian Church seeks to continue its strong Christian witness within the community. We seek to care for the congregation and the community through worship, outreach and fellowship in a manner which reflects our reformed tradition. It is our hope that Knox Church will continue to develop effective ways to be capable of sharing the faith journey with one another and offering a solid foundation in these changing times.

Worship Life

Knox Church is looking for a worship leader with strong preaching skills, who is prepared to include and encourage others to participate in leading worship. The choir numbers about seven people. Lay readers take part in the service each week. There are special services held throughout the year – Anniversary, Good Friday, Annual Congregational Picnic and Outdoor Service, along with several intergenerational services, Christmas pageant, and Christmas Eve service. We have a fine sound system, with a wireless microphone, in the sanctuary along with assistance for the hearing impaired. We provide transportation to our worship services each week from the local senior’s home.

Pastoral Care

Crisis visitation is an essential requirement for our minister. There is a need for programmed home visitations within the congregation. We have three nursing homes in the area which, in conjunction with the local Ministerial, each minister conducts worship three times a year in one of the Kincardine retirement homes and in Tiverton Park Manor. The choir, plus others from the congregation, accompany their minister to these services. Hospital visitation takes place in Kincardine. A Prayer Circle is active within the congregation and community to give support.

Christian Education and Youth Ministry

At present there is a small active Sunday School. We need a minister with the ability to guide our youth and encourage spiritual growth. We acknowledge that Christian Education is a life-long activity. Children are invited to participate in Communion.

Missions

Knox Church takes a lively interest in local, national and international mission projects. Throughout the year there are a number of ongoing projects including PWS&D, Crop Share, Emergency Appeals, Evangel Hall, Sleeping Children Around the World, and the Women’s House of Bruce County. As well, there is a very active WMS that supports these projects throughout the year.

Goals and Objectives

We have an active 5-year Restoration Committee with an enthusiastic agenda to paint and recarpet the Sanctuary prior to the 150th Anniversary in the fall of 2009. Many special services and events have been planned for 2009. Also, one of our goals is to enhance/upgrade the entrance to the church. As well, plans are underway to purchase a PowerPoint projector system for use in the church.

Finance and Property

The original church building underwent renovations in 1993 when an addition was added which included the minister’s study, nursery, new entrance, and an elevator to make the church completely handicap accessible. In 2006, a geothermal heating and air-conditioning system was installed. We boast a mortgage-free manse and church.

Manse

A well maintained 1500 sq. ft. bungalow, adjacent to the church, consists of three bedrooms, living room, kitchen and bathroom on the main floor. There is a family room (with wood stove), play area, bathroom, bedroom and storage area on the lower level. The home is heated by a forced air oil furnace. A one-car garage and spacious deck with a large back yard complete the manse property.

Community

Tiverton is a small village of approximately 1000 people surrounded by rural farms and lakeside seasonal residences. The village is roughly 60 kms south-west of Owen Sound, and 15 kms north of Kincardine. London, Kitchener and Guelph are within a two-hour drive. Tiverton is situated near beautiful beaches on the shores of Lake Huron. Public and high schools are within a 15 minute drive. There is a modern hospital in Kincardine. The village itself has a community centre, library, arena, firehall and several playgrounds. Recreational programs include hockey, skating, baseball and soccer. There are many active service groups such as Lions, Masons and the Agricultural Society. Bruce Power is nearby and employs 3200 people.
