Kings County 34th Annual Academic Decathlon

Saturday, February 6, 2016, Kings County high school students competed in the 34th Annual Kings County Academic Decathlon held at Lemoore High School. The 2016 event theme was “India”.Teams from Avenal High School, Corcoran High School, Hanford High School, Hanford West High School, Lemoore High School, Lemoore Middle College High School, and Sierra Pacific High School (a total of 84 students) competed in a rigorous set of academic examinations demonstrating their versatility in a variety of academic categories. Each team is comprised of “A”, “B” and “C” students. Team members participated in ten grueling events in the Academic Decathlon, including Art, Economics, Mathematics, Music, Language & Literature, Social Science, and Science. In addition, the contestants performed prepared and impromptu speeches, wrote essays on a given topic, and participated in interview competitions. The culminating activity was the Super Quiz.

Kings County students, coaches, and school representatives were eager to learn which team earned the highest overall point total.

Lemoore Middle College High School, coached by Allen Tong, was announced the “Winning Decathlon Team” with 49,392.7 points.

2nd Place: Lemoore High School with 34,680.9 points

3rd Place: Corcoran High School with 32,036.1 points

4th Place: Hanford West High School with 31,070.4 points

5th Place: Hanford High School with 26,366.2 points

6th Place: Sierra Pacific High School with 21,387.7 points

7th Place: Avenal High School with 17,889.3 points
Our winning Kings County team, Lemoore Middle College High School, will now advance to the State Academic Decathlon competition in Sacramento in March.
At the event awards ceremony individual medals and scholarships were won by students from each participating high school. More than $6,000 in scholarships were awarded to top placing Kings County students.

Congratulations to all participating students! This is a challenging event which requires immense preparation on the part of students and coaches. We are pleased to bring this event to our Kings County youth, presented in a format allowing students from each high school and of all ages an opportunity to win awards and scholarships!

The California Academic Decathlon is a not-for-profit organization supported through personal, corporate, and foundation contributions. Any contributions to help our winning Academic Decathlon Team to travel to state finals would be greatly appreciated.
