Art Curriculum Mission Statement and Belief Statements:

Our art curriculum reflects findings that "art education is fundamental to personal development, sharpens perceptual and analytical ability, and nurtures the creativity and imagination necessary for innovative thinking and problem solving."

-Eliot Eisner

Mission Statement:

The mission of our art program is to provide students with an experience, appreciation, and understanding of the visual arts. Art is a universal language. Education in the visual arts strives to promote life-long creativity, aesthetic judgment, and visual perception skills. Through experiences in the visual arts, students can understand the role of the Arts in societies, diverse cultures, and historical periods, and come to understand the historical and cultural factors that have shaped individuals, communities, and nations.

Belief Statements:

We believe that an experience in the visual arts contributes to:

§  An essential part of everyone's education

§  The ability to develop and use art skills and techniques to express ideas, pose and solve problems, and communicate meaning.

§  The ability to communicate the concepts, structures, and processes in the visual arts.

§  The ability to perceive and analyze characteristics and merits of their work and the work of other artists.

§  The development of an aesthetic awareness of the world around us.

§  The development of personal meaning.

§  The ability to connect the arts, other subject areas, life, and work.

The Kalispell School District Art Curriculum is designed to meet the Montana Content Standards for the Arts. The courses represented herein are designed to meet the minimum curriculum requirements necessary to fulfill the learning objectives of the Kalispell School District. Individual courses listed in this curriculum may be combined or not be taught if enrollment, scheduling sequences, teacher certification or funding does not meet Kalispell School District's and/or the school's minimum requirements. The art elements and principles referred to throughout this curriculum and referenced in Attachment “B” vary from artist to artist and book to book; however, the basic concepts are the same.
